I was wondering where I would find the most up to date satellite images?

Im trying to find out if a certain powerplant is abandoned and what condition its in and I'd rather not do the 5hr round trip just to find a field. Google maps and Google earth both seem to have images from when the plant was operational.

Always question the context.

If Google maps doesn't have what you are looking for, your best bet is to check other sources of satellite photography for something that might be slightly more up to date. GeoHack has a good list.

There are a few ways to get at known-recent satellite images, though all that I know of either cost money or require you to have a good reason to view them.
Most of the daily images you will find of non-populated areas have a resolution of ~3 meters per pixel. Higher resolution passes do happen but are far less frequent and usually require more money / extra justification to get.

Are you using the web based Google Earth or have you downloaded the Google Earth Pro app? Because if you have the latter you can use the history tool to see pictures taken on different days.

You can't just demolish big things without permit. So before you make a long trip, try researching the property. Look for demolition permits and such.

I don't know if its changed, but the version of image available on maps.google.com isn't always avialable on Google Earth, so always check both.
