Evening. So from what I’ve seen and heard, people here strongly oppose breaking into places to gain access to a location. So where do lockpicks fall into? Acceptable? Or off limits?

Depends on the moral standard of the explorer.

Usually it’s a no, as if you’re caught doing it, it’ll be classified as B&E.

However, if you’re caught with only a screwdriver as your lockpick, you could usually get away with saying it was being used for something else.

Seems like this has been coming up a lot lately lol.

Morality and Legality have little in common these days beyond the basic age old "thou shalt not" based laws.

Morally I'd prefer you use a pick. Legally, you are right about the screwdriver probably landing you in less trouble.

But if you're using a screwdriver to brute force cylinders or pry open doors, that really doesn't sit well with me. Not only does it leave the location unsecure, but the property owner is more apt to notice.

Just my 2 cents.

Lock picks take a a lot of practice to be good with. I've watched professional locksmiths struggle trying to pick locks and ultimately just drill out the cylinder after they lose their patience.

In Iowa, if you're in a B&E situation, it's an aggravated misdemeanor to possess lock picks, but unless the cops can prove you intend to use them unlawfully, lock picks are not illegal to possess in Iowa.

Then there's this method:

Lock picks are great. As long as you put the lock back where it goes what's the big deal. Some people on here will find anything to call wrong. It's better to pick a lock then pry open a door or cut a fence. Then again I'm a bit bias as I'm learning to pick locks for my new job lol.

Gotta pick 'em all.

Some explorers use them, but the general consensus is that it's like fight club- rule number one is you don't talk about it (online).

Like aran say we should not talk about it online since it's illegal, but all we do is so.. lol

Personally i don't really care, i don't see where i could get in trouble online for talking about that more of talking about going into off limit places.

I think lock picking is one of the best thing you can learn in this hobby, it open so many doors (literally) that otherwise you would need to use destructive force or really complicated method to enter if there is no other way.

The best thing is, you leave no trace of you being there and you have an easy acces.

I love lock picking and all the non destructive bypass method like jimming/prying.

If you don't already do it, i say start with a basic set, it will be helpfull on many occasion i guarantee you.

I am totally for it. I totally agree with ClementRSedona too. I prefer to try to pick a lock than arrive with a mass...

I would be careful as fuck. Screen all your calls. Trust no one. Have a stack of license plates that you swap out on your car, at least weekly, if not twice a week.

If you currently have picks. The best thing you can do, is melt them down into their raw form. You don't want to be caught with the evidence, on your person, or, anywhere, because, they know.

Once you've done that... Close your uer account.

When you're questioned. And, you will be. ADMIT TO NOTHING.

All your hard drives need to be destroyed. I know some good incinerator services if you need them. DM me.

Well, if you're worried about picking a lock to access an area that is most likely off limits to you anyway, then you have to decide which crime you are comfortable with.

I would rather bypass/pick a lock than physically cause injury jumping over a fence or accessing a hazardous entry.

I love high and mighty discussions in a forum dedicated to going where you're not supposed to go.

Your main problem would probably be how hard they are to use, even if you are an expert. I've (and this is a theoretical version of myself, of course) tried a lock pick on a a few doors before and it took about 10-20 minutes and then I just gave up. However, I have gotten into dozens of doors with the butter knife shim method. If you supplement it with a small crowbar or another, more innocuous, piece of sturdy metal, you can open pretty much any non dead bolted door that opens out. At least in my (theoretical) experience.

Well, if lock picks are not your thing, there are other methods.
