I’ve decided this deserves its own thread because of the “holy grail of exploring,” status this place holds for so many people, and most importantly, the potential for catastrophic consequences of Chernobyl (including the reactor that had the meltdown back in 1986 - reactor #4) burning.

Wildfire moves within a mile of Chernobyl nuclear power plant ...
https://metro.co.u...er-plant-12552710/

Potential dispersal of radioactive material into the atmosphere and it sounds like the fire was incendiary (intentional):

Kyiv is now on alert for possible smoke and/or radiation increases today as the fire edges closer to the Chernobyl nuclear plant

I follow the Chernobyl sub-reddit, where there are a number of people and guides from the area, and as of this morning they've had heavy rains that seem to have knocked the fires down substantially (as per their postings; I have nothing else to back that up with).

As far as anyone knows, the fires have not touched the Chernobyl NPP or Pripyat. It also looks like the Duga-3 array survived, but barely (the fires got stupid close).

Some other abandonment within the Exclusion Zone did not fare so well - the Emerald Camp was razed in the fire.

I remember reading about how the trees in the region were releasing small amounts of radiation when the locals were burning them for heat and cooking. I wonder if there's a measurable spike in the area during this.

It's 16x above normal levels right now - that said, the actual measurement is about 2.4 μSv/h, which is roughly the same dose you get per hour on a flight at cruising altitude.

Not great, not terrible.

This is distressing news. One of the most interesting biological phenomena of the Chernobyl zone is the lack of microorganisms breaking down organic matter each year like leaves, etc. this means there is an abundance of tinder all over the area. As well as the uncontrolled forest growth bringing dense woods in around a large number of structures in the city. I hope the rain did indeed help reduce the blaze and that the firefighters are able to contain it. It’s uncomfortably close to the anniversary of this disaster

Man that is very unfortunate. The aftermath almost looks like ancient ruins from the fire

I hope not. The place is of great interest to me.

I obsessed over that disaster in elementary school

Fires in the exclusion zone are not that uncommon, usually started accidentally by lightning, or the so-called 'stalkers' who travel illegally in the exclusion zone or residents in the non-exclusion zone.

That being said these ones are the biggest for some time, and it's not exactly great.

They have pretty good evidence that this was arson. They have a young adult male in custody and this allegedly wasn’t his first fire - if he was indeed the culprit.

I also saw news of rain, so I truly hope that Mother Nature is able to help out. Otherwise, the fire reaching the reactors and radioactive waste almost seems imminent.

I also read about the radioactivity causing the rate of decomposition to slow (which is fascinating in its own right). Experts had been warning about this being extremely conducive to wildfire spread for over a decade now. But, as CoVid-19 and every other disaster has indicated - we are almost always reactive, rather than proactive in nature.

I've always wondered why it was so hard to get in the exclusion zone without being guided. Thought it was just a matter of business. Seems like it wasn't just that. Fuck

Hopefully the rain came in the nick of time. Here is the latest and the Moscow Times seems to have summarized the situation pretty accurately and succinctly for anyone interested:

https://www.themos...uclear-zone-a69973

For those of us that still have Pripyat on our bucket list, the latest data suggests about 30% of the areas of interest (for tourists, etc) were completely destroyed, but that the the majority of the most visited and popular landmarks are still standing.

https://www.google...rned-in-chernobyl/

It also looks like the sarcophagus (dome structure) that encases reactor #4 is undamaged, which is especially good news.

Edited because grammar matters.

Shiey & his buddy Anton are by far the greatest stalkers of all time and I truly hope these fires don't affect him and the video content he posts.

For what it's worth, there's a video in this news article. Yes, it's in Russian, but don't turn the sound off or you'll miss oh shit moment with the firefighters.

He frequents Chernobyl and Ukraine in general. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up visiting Pripyat soon to check out the damage.

Funny you talk about that cause i just watched the 2h30 video last night.

Actually Shiey was just a "tourist" in that explore, Anton was for him just a random guy.
Anton IS the great stalker with the knowledge and experience, without him they would have been caught 100%.

Still the video was cool. It sucks that there is so much tourism that you can't almost not explore the place in daylight as a stalker.

I hope one day i can do the same trip one day

That's exactly what I thought when I've watched that video. Shiey is pretty skilled in many areas but nothing compared to that guy in Pripyat.

That's a huge trip only a few would do, hope you'll !

Well i must admit Shiey has some funny moments in his videos BUT its very VERY easy to find out places from his videos and thats not a good thing (places very soon get demolished etc). Altough he is not mentioning exact locations in his videos, its wayyyyy too easy to do find them, within 5 minutes of google maps streetview small research, many locations are served on a plate..

Anyway, i hope ukrainians (or whatever did that) will stop burning the dry grass (its a stupid tradition from the Soviet times, still some stupid people are doing it around all post USSR countries). It causes a great damage to animals and trees.
