What kind of flash lights do y'all prefer to use on your adventures?

My lights that I carry generally are one or two of the lights below. Depends on what I'm expecting.

I have my Streamlight Protac HL-5 with a maximum of 3500 lumens output. I generally use this in spaces without windows as this light is bright as shit even on the Lowest setting of like (200 lumens I think). I love the thing. It works good as a hand warmer, and a beating stick if need be. Good combo light.

I have my home made Aqua-blue flashlight utilizing 21 high output aqua colored 5mm LED's in a solid aluminum case. It runs off of 3aa batteries. I like using this anywhere where I need a dimmer light. I plan to eventually build a red and a yellowish-green (563nm) version aswell. I more or less just built this for shits and giggles however this is the only flashlight I own that I can whip off a three story building and have survive unscathed.

My third is a TL-132 Elbow flashlight utilizing the good Ole incandescent technology. It has the option of four colored gels. I like the spectrum emitted by this incandescent flashlight more than the LED's. It is softer, dimmer and less noticeable.

And my fourth is a sportsman also using incandescent.

I've got the old faithful Lenser P7.2 as well as a just as good Cree torch, but recently I got myself an LED bar light which is an awesome piece of kit, throws out adjustable perfectly white light and makes it super easy to light up large spaces evenly.

Can you post a Pic of your bar light? Is it one of those lights on a swivel joint or is it a head lamp? It sounds like a neat light.

I also use handheld LEDs that have magnets and little hooks on them so I can stick them in a few different areas for even lighting. I would really like a good strong traditional flashlight for light painting as well though. I can never find one that is has the strength without a big hot spot in the middle.

Not a traditional flashlight but this is my absolute favorite light I’ve ever used. It lit up the space of zjelava adequately with just one.

It's on a swivel joint, it's not so much a bar more a panel light with a couple of hundred LEDs in it. It's also got a mounting point so you can slot it in your camera's hot/cold shoe. I'll see if I can get a photo of it up..

For taking photos and videos, I would recommend any head lamps from Armytek if you're looking for quality. It's expensive though at around 100$ when I bought it at least. I use a ArmyTek Wizard Pro. It's an amazing light so far and I've had it for about a year and a half so I think it's fairly ok to make judgement on it now.

Any recommendations for the tint of the lights? I use warm tints and I find them to be a good balance when doing light videos. For photoraphy, it's different. Although there might be too much of a "color" for my taste.
I still do love warm lights.

Used to have a good rechargeable Fenix flashlight until it stopped working :/

Now all I’ve been using is a $10 eBay flashlight and my phone light.

Honestly, phone lights are surprisingly pretty bright. Not as much as sperate flashlights, but it does get the job done really well.
It's saved me countless times when my light would run out of batteries.

I use a small tactical and rechargable Olight flashlight. I like the different settings. Moon light setting is a must.

Yeah flashlights!!

I love flashlights/lights and it's what you need if you really want to push your photography in dark places and drains to the next level.

Color temperature and beam patern is important if you dont want a spot in your pictures, but anyway the best way to light paint is indirect light (example bouncing on the wall or ceiling or a led panel but i find this too big to carry)

But still, you want a "flooder", not a "thrower".
(you want a thrower still in your kit for long distance lighting)

Make sure to always check what the company say before you buy. Chinese company have been telling false lumens numbers for years and i feel it's getting worse with all those "tHis Is THe MoSsT pOwERfuLl liGHt On EaRTt" Or like, "it'S pOlIce or mIliTaRy GrAdE".

Basically, almost all LED flashlight on earth uses Cree leds in their light, even those chinese one.

So if you want to know if it's bullshit or legit number, just go on cree website and check the datasheets.

Actually the most powerfull led is the XPH70.2 capable of pruducing around 4000 lumens, so it's impossible that a flashlight produce more than that with a single led.

The chinese company could boost the led at the max but it will not last long.

Whats make a good flashlight is the driver inside and material/build quality.

Ok enough with the infos lol, but feel free to ask anything.

Before, i had a simple led maglight and one day i decided to built a crazy powerful led light made out a 35v 100w led chip and an old incandescant light casing.
It had 2 fans wich one was on a CPU heat dissipator, a 12v 9ah battery, a dimmer, an 120v input and a inboard charging port.
It was 10,000lumens and at that time nothing was brighter really on the market to buy.

If you are interested, i have put all the pictures of the build in this shared folder, if you have any question feel free to ask.
Everything from the charging to the converting board are home made.

https://drive.goog...1GgKkM?usp=sharing

You can see it there next to an x80 that have 25,000lm, 3 time as powerfull and 30 time smaller! Crazy how technology have grown fast over the years.

After a lot of research, comparing and benchmarking i found what i think is the best flashlight out there in separate category:

For the compact size category (one battery, hand/pocket size), the best is the Acebeam EC50.
The battery duration time, output, usb rechargable, builts specs and the features make it the better one.
You have a very low setting at like 2 lm perfect when you need to be extra sneaky. (can also attach different color gels they sells)

In 2017 i bought the EC50II that was offered in 2 color temperature (5000-6000k) and was 3000lumens powered by the cree xph70.

Then last year i bought two more, another first gen ec50II and one of the new model, the EC50III now with the most powerful single led on the market, the XPH70.2 with an output of 3850lm.

Then for the "sodacan" high output size category it's hand down again Acebeam with the Acebeam X80, that come with lot of different variation of the same light. And it's also the most powerfull on the market in it's size category and the best battery duration specs.
(25.000 lm with 4 colors, 35,000 lm, UV etc)
(the most powerful flashlight on the market is the Imalent Ms18 with 100,000lm powered by 18 xph70.2)

The one i have it's the X80 at 25,000lm with the 4 colors.

You can also set a lot of things on fire. One time i was walking with it in my pocket and for some reason it got activated in turbo mode. My coat literally melted, i saw the light on the sidewalk going tru the burning holes before i even had time to felt the heat loll.

Here is a little video:

For the portable lights (like essexplorer explained with his small magnetic lights) i found recently a company i never heard of.

I needed a small, most compact possible, magnetic and powerfull floody light.
I would usually hide my flashlights in neons casing or light fixtures to reproduce the original lighting conditions but it was not easy to place them and that it look like legit with no beam streaks.

I just needed more small 'ambiance' lights anyway.

So after a bunch of comparison with the already known Lume Cube, Litra torch and ulanzi my choice stopped on the Mirfak Moin L1.

It's magnetic, usb magnetic charge, bluetooth(can pair and control 6 at the time), 30ft waterproof and you can change the color temperature wich is the only one that does that on the market.
That's why i choosed it. Ho and it's half the price of the fucking overpriced lume cube/litra.

It's 1000 lumens per little cube with 40minutes of autonomy on full power, the app is really cool too.

No, i don't love Flashlight. haha

I got a couple of GearLight brand tactical LED mini flashlights from my dad (awesome guy who enables my abandonment issues😏) a couple Christmases ago...they take 3 AAA batteries, and they have served me well.
Recently I bought a Hyper Tough brand 5000 lumen rechargeable work light from Walmart (about $70).
Last weekend I did an explore (in respect to social distancing I was alone, and it was in the woods; no stops or interaction on my trip) and field tested it...worked well; battery life is about 2 hours, turns pitch black into something the camera can pick up on...I was pleased.
Honestly tho, it has its drawbacks too; it's not huge, but the little f**ker will add some weight to your gear, and of course, depending on where you are, it would make you much more visible to anyone who was observing than would a smaller light.

I have a GI angle head that I converted to LED.

I also have one of these Ron Popeil specials which is not a great flashlight, but adds a retro aspect to exploring.

@clement - I like that multifunction torch you have there. I've never seen that before. Also nice magnetic cube lights.

@Thor - i like that! In the past I've had the urge to haul along a coleman lantern or something. I've taken my coleman to the junkyard a couple times but I haven't used it in any actual buildings.

@Natchras - I use my phone flashlight aswell. There comes times when it is handy. However most of the time my phone is in camera mode so I can't really use it as a flashlight.

hahaha!, yeah those kind of lights are really in another category of use and cost thousands of dollars $$$$

The actual light output is not very much, it's like 1000-1500 lumens. It's really more a beam for long distances.

Thats the kind of searchlight you would find on a helicopter!

Nah if you want lumens.... Check out this puppy that I built out of an old stage light and a ballast box.
I call it "Hells eye" because if you're dumb enough to look directly at it it literally looks like a blazing retina destroying eye ball with a slitted pupil. It emits 150,000 lumens, eats watts for breakfast and is heavy as shit. I've contemplated mounting it on wheels and dragging it into an abandoned structure to take pictures lol.

Yeah thats a nice light! but we are talking about flashlights! Of course we can build a 1 million lumens light out of a bunch of leds chips or wathever but the feat is to make it compact transportable and durable!

I was not trying to make a lumens war lol. There is probably someone that owns the MS18 here, he would be the king lol.

Imo if it does not fit in your pocket or at least in your backpack it's useless for exploration. My big light was a pain in the ass to carry but they were not selling same power/flood pocket size light back then.
