OT - Coronavirus and a comunity question

Off topic and if that breaks a rule, sorry! This is a community after all, some of you have prepper tendencies (thats a good thing). Can be quite pragmatic too. So its kinda not off topic, its just about our skill set.

I live in the eastern USA and a bbc article said this,

"
Health officials in the US have warned Americans to brace for the "inevitable" spread of the coronavirus disease that is sweeping the world.
"

This is the CDC and WHO saying these things, the big guns. Articles are suggesting potential school and biz closures, public transportation etc.

People in the USA do not have the luxury of taking time off work so it will spread. I work a low level customer facing job and there is just no talk about it at all.

Are you doing anything? To prep that is,

I have a supply of N95 masks for me and my family, and am buying bulk hand sanitizer tomorrow I can carry with me to using during the day.

Some people are saying to have at least a month of any prescription drugs you take. non perishable food etc. I have not gone this far.

Whats your story? This is serious right?

EDIT: Whats your prediction, all blow over or shit hits the fan?

B

From what I understand, a COVID-19 illness is basically not going to be much different than the flu for most people without underlying conditions (advanced age, respiratory/circulatory problems, etc). The primary difference is that it might be so mild at the outset that people don't realize they are even infected... which facilitates its transmission greatly. This is not SARS nor MERS.

The best thing for people to do is to:
1. Focus on keeping your immune system in tip-top shape by emphasizing good nutrition, rest, and low stress.
2. Practice good hand-to-face hygiene.
3. Wash hands often, and/or use hand sanitizer.
4. Be aware of high-transmissivity circumstances/places (eg. busy, packed venues).
5. Perhaps reconsider travel plans, if not for yourself, but others that you might end up being a vector for.
6. Be doubly aware when you visit people with underlying conditions that might be seriously impacted by COVID-19.
7. Notify and visit your medical practitioner if you suspect you have been infected, and follow their advice.

You don't really need N95 respirators unless you are a front-line medical worker deliberately entering into circumstances in which you will be exposing yourself to COVID-19 patients/quarantine areas.

The only reason you might want to stock up on food is if you anticipate public paranoia to reach a crescendo where merchants close-up out of fear. (Read: it would not be for the realistic risk of infection assuming you are practicing good hygiene as noted above.)

Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. But I am employed in the biological sciences and I get to read the papers coming out documenting the disease.

I'm in Korea, and the government pays for any corona-related medical costs here. So if you think you have it, getting tested is free.

The vast majority of cases here were spread by a pseudo-Christian cult, so as long as you avoid any religious people you should be good.

In Finland, the government doesn't seem that phased by the virus. Not sure if it's a healthy attitude to avoid panic or if they're brushing it aside completely. I'm slowly starting to think it's the latter, though. I have an asthmatic cough in the cold, so I'm a little more worried than a regular person.

As dtew said, there's no need to go and get a gas mask. Stocking up on canned food, however, only makes sense and is probably a good idea regardless of the situation. If your city is quarantined and/or there's panic, it's probably a good idea to stay inside for a while.

*giggle* if this gets going stateside only luck and a vaccine will save you.
It's extremely contagious and apparently with a asymptomatic period where it can be transmitted.
Face masks are almost useless in close contact; eyes and all skin need to be covered. They're wearing fully sealed pressurized biohazards suits and using level 4 decontamination procedures if available; what's that tell you?

My guess is this is a bioweapon or a product of the Chinese bioweapons lab.
Release was a complete goof up or a deliberate release of a inadvertantly cross contaminated weaker strain meant to test dispersal.
Dispersal testing like this is common; even the US did it covertly in the late 50's in LA I believe it was.

A vaccine will save you, so will being in generally good health and practising thorough hygiene as to date the only deaths attributed to it are in people who have already compromised immune systems or underlying health problems which lead to them developing pneumonia.

It's no more contagious than any other flu-like virus and spread through exactly the same means, if you're shit scared of this specific Coronavirus but don't care about the annual seasonal flu virus that kills upwards of 60,000 people a year in the USA alone then I suggest you stop being so easily lead by the sensationalist gutter press or conspiracy websites.

Look at my Texas flu thread.
There's emerging evidence it's much more contagious than the flu.
Chinese stats aren't valid.
Many who ha e been saved were in ICU,
Without aggressive intervention the mortality rate been much higher like China; they stopped counting and started stacking.
My guess SARs bad or worse... let's wait and see.

Some like the Chinese Doctor who was KIA by it were young and healthy.
It causes massive lung infections, all lobes and leaves a telltale X-ray, so much so they are using it for early diagnosis in symptomatic patients.
This is an unique virus with the potential to mutate to an even more virulent strain in future seasons.
Now that's it infecting in the free world more reliable stats will be forth coming.

I'm not expert *giggle* and could be wrong.
Just reading the writing on the wall...
I hope I am wrong...

It has the potential to be widespread here and the announcement of community transmission in the US yesterday will possibly increase that likelihood.

I’m making sure I have 2 weeks worth of food in case I need to remain in my house for any reason. I am waiting for updated protocols for my job and will draft a plan for shutting my office down if need be. Front line retail staff should be talking with their managers about this sort of thing. Playing ostrich is maybe not the best plan right now.

For those with sufficient general background to digest a plain-written journal article, here is a summary of the current state of the COVID-19 epidemic in China as of Feb 11th. It provides a better big-picture overview of the epidemic, and you will likely come away with a better placement (and proportion) of concerns, which will likely better guide your personal response to it.

I read it. A little technical in places and verbose perhaps. But it is as advertised, very good article,

Think of the slow motion pathogen equivalent of a critical excursion.
Once a certain threshold is reached it just goes in an unstoppable exponential blue flash of death.
If this happens they will stop counting and start stacking.
Some things never change.

The article doesn't say that much about what it's like living during an epidemic, or what it would be like in the US.

Americans have a lower population density than Chinese. They also have poorer access to healthcare, but know how to wash their hands. The spread would probably be slower, and you'd see isolated communities reach very high rates of infection. A major vector of infection is public gatherings, especially religious services, and it would take a few high-profile incidents before Christians come to some kind of compromise and start teleworshipping or something. I think this will be especially tough with Pence in charge, as people will continue thinking the benefits of group worship will outweigh the chances of spreading the virus. You'll also see public events like concerts and sporting events being cancelled and schedules will clear months in advance. Schools and libraries will close, and teachers and students will spend their time at home, and soon people of more jobs will be on leave. Since it's Americans there's probably already some hoarding going on, which is probably good, and most Americans have drinkable tapwater. I'm not sure if people will wear masks when they're in public, because they are ineffective and an Asian thing, but will probably take some visible precautions. There will be talk of grounding airplanes and closing borders, although that's been going on for years -- but Trump will be criticised for not actually doing it, even by Democrats looking for political points. And that's around where Seoul is so I can't really predict farther than that.

pseudo-Christian cult,

First Korea gave us The Moonies now this.

Meanwhile over at the Kremlin, they seem to be suppressing stories connecting Shincheonji to COVID-19.

Any Russian-language coverage of them is coming from outside of Russia.

Yeah, there has been a lot of coverage of them and they're responsible for about half the cases here so far, which will likely lead to a serious outbreak domestically but who knows in what other countries. I've had interactions with Shincheonji in the past and posted about it here.

They apparently had a church in Wuhan which is how they became so closely tied with the virus. There's been a lot of domestic coverage of their covering up of their activities. It's nice to finally see Koreans calling them out so openly.
