Definitely The Road. Both the movie and book were great. But also incredibly depressing.
On the subject of movies, in terms of video games, The Last of Us was amazing with the concept of a deadly Fungal virus that kills off most of humanity with buildings filled with green vegetation on buildings everywhere and abandonment galore.

playing an Ubisoft game right now that has elements of that... it's called "Tom Clancy's The Division 2" and it is set in Washington DC seven months after a genetically engineered smallpox virus has pretty much wiped most of the world out. A core of the game is exploring the world and finding things.
the first game took place in New York City immediately after the virus was released but was not as user friendly or immersive as the second one.

Oh I heard of that game. I never got around to playing it but I might check it out very soon. The concept behind that is really interesting. I'll check it out soon for sure

I feel like 12 monkeys. With Bruce Willis, not the awful scifi series. Has UE elements. And was shot, largely in some great abandoned buildings.

The Host by Bong Joon-ho, although it's more like the film inspired urban exploration rather than the other way around. Every Christmas we go into the tunnel where it was filmed and hunt for that monster. Thanks to our efforts there have been no Host attacks since 2009.

Thank you for your service. *salutes*

Mimic, directed by Guillermo Del Toro and starring Mira Sorvino, has a lot of great urbex type activity in the subway tunnels below Manhattan and an abandoned church. Also, giant mutant killer cockroaches that look eerily human.

MOLE MAN

"MOLE MAN follows RON, a 66-year-old autistic man who has spent the last five decades building a 50-room structure in his parents' backyard. Using no nails or mortar, Ron instead creates perfectly balanced structures from scavenged materials he finds in the woods outside his Western Pennsylvania home. When Ron's father passes away, leaving him living alone with his 90-year-old mother, Ron's siblings are left to figure out what's best for Ron - who has never been officially diagnosed with autism - when his mother can no longer care for him. In an effort to find the money to keep Ron in his home, his friends team up in search of a mythical mansion Ron insists lays abandoned in the forest. But will they be able to find it? And, more importantly, does it even exist? This is the story of an extraordinary life, a family, and the beauty of thinking differently."

I read The Road before I watched the movie. Pretty good adaptation of a very bleak, but possibly realistic tale.

It's bleak as hell, but I think it's closer to what will happen. I am a fan of apocalyptic fiction, but most of it is unrealistic in some way or another.

Session 9 is one of my favorite movies. I wouldn't call it UE inspired but it takes place in an abandoned asylum so close enough.

Sense8 is my favorite show, period. There are many scenes that take place in abandoned, half-ruined churches that are incredibly beautiful.

I wouldn't recommend "Child of God" then. Cormac McCarthy has a messed up mind. Then again, The Sunset Limited is one of my favorites.

I don't do well at picking favorites, and It Follows wouldn't be on my top ten or anything, but it was decent and had some great urbex scenes.

127 Hours is a film that reflects the consequences of what can happen to us during our adventures.
