FIPPA Request

Hello fellow explorers! I have a question for you all. Has anyone ever put in a request through the freedom of information and protection of privacy act? I am looking into acquiring blueprints for an abandoned asylum from the Ontario Archives, and I’m wondering if anyone has done something like this before and might have some helpful tips.

The blueprints are over 100 years old, and exploring the asylum with a map would be something straight out of my favourite video game series Silent Hill. Super stoked!

Any advice is appreciated! Happy and safe exploring!

wouldn't this be like telling the authorities who you are and what your favorite hobby is? (assuming no B&E required for this location)

Not sure. I’ve never thought of it that way actually, but you have very valid points! Maybe time to rethink the plan to request the blueprints. My understanding was they are public domain after 100 years. But, I would rather not draw any attention to the hobby or the location. Seems I’ve solved my own dilemma. Lol.

I don't think the police and people working at the public archives have any interaction or professional overlap whatsoever. I wouldn't worry at all about this tipping anyone off to anything.

The blueprints are in the public domain and there are 1000 legitimate reasons why you could want to view them, not that you need to justify your request.

That being said, I've never accessed them before so I can't describe the experience. Let us know how it goes.

The prints could bring meaningful insight to the structures and maybe even some hidden tunnels, rooms as well as intended area usage.
I think there's near zero risk as far as alerting LEOs.
If it was current utility infrastructure it might be a different story... it's not.
Not sure it's worth all the trouble but who knows the prints may prove useful.
Also having the Beginning and the End puts a cool spin on your splore.
Sounds like good fun to me

I got my hands on the GIS maps of the city storm sewer system simply by going down to the Department of Civil Engineering and asking. A lot of this stuff is available to the public upon request, and you don't have to justify why you want it.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

Right on guys, thanks! I’ve actually been inside the asylum twice before. It’s like a maze. And we found some old arch doorways in the basement tunnels that seemed to have been bricked over and sealed up very recently. I’ve always wondered if getting a map would tell me what’s behind the doors!! Maybe I’ll give it a try after all.

Definitely do it.

I've used FIPPA a few times - the worst that they'll do is say no.

If they do bother you for a justification, some excuses that I usually find work:
* You want the tree protection plan (most cities mandate it, and it'll give you a good site plan)
* You want the Subsurface Utility Engineering drawings, because you're concerned about leeching of old buried lines into the surrounding ecosystem (SUE drawings give you all the tunnel locations as well, and they are usually much more likely to help you when it's an environmental cause)
* You're an architecture student and you want the architectural plans for a school project (the architectural plans are what most people mean when they say "blueprints")
* You're an engineering student and you want the structural plans for a school project (they're like the architectural plans only way more cluttered)

You should also try just googling it. I find a google search of '"Basement Plan" filetype:pdf keyword' works wonders to find floorplans of building "Keyword". If you find a particular site that seems to have good stuff on it, add 'site:thatsite.com' to limit it to that.

I've become quite adept at that latter technique lately - if you let me know which asylum you're looking into I'd be happy to give it a google and pass on what I find to you!

I have and was basically given a big "Fuck you" by the New York State DEC. The lady I dealt with was rude and threatened me, told me I had "No business" asking about the state of a Superfund site and seeing if they had the old tapes in their archives.

Rudeness is the god given right of anyone from the NE; wait until you deal with a really pissed off NE cop.
I have faith in you...
