This, I learned, is called a swing bridge for how it opens to make channels for boats to pass through. This particular bridge swung its last swing some time in the 80s.

I'd seen this thing many times off the side of the highway and finally decided to visit it earlier this year, thus ending a long dark age in my urbex history. Very glad I did, as it set off a chain of new adventures.

Cool pictures. I love how you can see the tracks warping.

Looks like that bridge won't be around for too much longer. How did you get from one side to the other?

I didn't, all those pictures were taken from the same side. The other side runs into some fenced off industrial vacant lots, and probably would have been much harder to access. I wouldn't put money on the bridge being demolished anytime soon either, there've been talks of destroying it and of renovating it for years and years and nothing ever comes of it. The latest plans for the area actually all involve preserving the bridge, but I'd be surprised if any development happens at all. Sure would be cool though!
