Visited the dangerous Silo where the poor girl passed away a couple years ago. It is very dangerous in that place due to the man holes shaped in a square where a human can easily fit through to a plummet of 10 stories high. The smell of bat shit and melted tar from the roof isn't no joke either its kind of makes feel light headed. No to mention the ladders that dont have no safety rails and no harness. The only things you rely on is your arms and legs, no space for mistakes because one careless mistake could be your last here. There was a shit ton of vultures too, maybe things constantly die up there that's why vultures fly and peep inside. Other than that the view is rewarding and you get a good workout in.1.

This isn’t the silo where that girl died. That is a smaller one a few miles away from this one. I remember that story. Actually, I’m pretty sure I posted that news article on UER when it happened come to think of it. I’ll see if I can find it.

I love these silos though. Great views and it’s massive (but also extremely dangerous, probably one of the more hazardous explores in the DFW area due to the hell holes literally everywhere, sketchy ladders, crumbling concrete, etc.). I’ve been here at least half a dozen times but I never get used to that climb to the top. Climbing that freaky ladder while wearing a backpack full of gear and a tripod is always an interesting challenge, lol.

I’ve gotten lots of photos of the vultures too. They have a nest up there at the top towards the center of the structure. I was able to take some pretty cool shots of three of them fighting over territory(?) last time I was there.

Fun fact: I don’t know if this holds true currently, but at one time this was the tallest abandonment in DFW.

EDIT:

I found the thread about the girl:

Cool

Trust nothing... including what appears to be solid concrete.
Any fasteners going into concrete for ladders, catwalks, pipes, etc are suspect.
They can break with the slightest stress sometimes... with no warning.
Multiple anchor cascading failures are not uncommon either.
The extent of the corrosion can be hard to spot.
It's happened to me and others here.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

One of these two granaries has a metal staircase inside that if you weigh more than 98 lbs wants to sway and bend away from the wall, anchor bolts have long since gone beyond their "best before July 1952" date and no longer anchor anything!

The other one was full of abandoned dogs and discarded people. And scrappers. If there is any loose metal left, scrappers.

I’m willing to bet you’re referring to this one! That shitty ladder is the only way up (two shitty ladders, actually, but one of the ladders is almost always sealed up at the bottom). I haven’t been to the other granary, but I’m told there are stairs.

Edit: I’m very surprised there aren’t deaths reported at this location, tbh.

I wouldn't do the ladder even if it wasn't blocked off, not now, maybe 20yrs ago haha. The stair looked substantial, welded steel made from grate but the bolts had pulled out of the concrete and I didn't find that out until I was out on the 2nd landing and it started to move. Shit! I was all by myself too only a couple of scrappers outside.

There were some semi-permanent squatter communities in here too but I enjoyed taunting the dogs most of all a couple of them were psycho/scary though. I got pics of them and some of the puppies which were everywhere.

edit: I have confused the two elevators the "Heights" was the one with the scary stairs and scary scrappers. This one "Southside" was the one with Cenikor drug rehab next door, all the used hypodermic needles and spoons and the crazy dogs as well as Union Pacific goons patrolling off-property. Had to refer to the DB my memory is running kinda slow.

WoW.! I remember when all the rolling apparatus was still there on the top. Scrappers been busy.
Is there still a pile of crap at each landing on the way up? I always thought that was real odd, but then, people who frequent places like this (not explorers of course) would do things like that. LOL

There isn't a pile of crap on each floor but there is black tar from the roof leaking through cracks and crevices, has a horrendous smell and the bat shit does not help either, but you get used to it. There isn't nothing you can salvage now because you need an actual machine to cut shit up. I tried lifting some crap out of the way and whatever is left over is extremely heavy.

There is even sketchier one on the one north side that grooves down to a shed that the homeless did.

Surprisingly the ladder still holds up and the ones that are kind of loose are the ones that are outside of the silo that take you to the roof, the wind rattles faster the more you climb up. Its very scary but at the same time fun. At least for me hahaha

This is still active? Like, I could go out tomorrow, gear in tow, and start climbing the Silo?

Hell, what would you even need for a trek like this? Radios? Rope? Grappling hook? Some sort of food to ward off the buzzards, perhaps?

There used to be hundreds of rollers and equipment up there but the scrappers have been busy. They were just getting started last time I was there.

The other side (west silo) has more of the rollers and stuff still there. Probably because it's sealed at the bottom and trickier to get to - therefore trickier to lug all that crap back down to the bottom.

This was the other silo about a year and a half ago. I assume it's still in similar condition:

There used to be a homeless guy that lived at the bottom of the sketchy ladder. If you gave him 5 bucks he'd post look out for you and alert you if anyone was coming by banging on the metal ladder.
