This former colony plan asylum for 'mental defectives' was one of the last big institutions of it's type, founded in 1932 in an old manor house and the colony itself opened a short time later. It was used as a war hospital from 1939-1945, and part of the site became another adjacent general hospital in 1947. The colony plan hospital ran until the early 1990s when it was closed along with many similar institutions of it's type. After closure part of it became used by the adjacent general hospital, much of it was demolished and the manor house became a care home.

There is one pocket of original buildings left standing completely hidden in the trees next to the largely in use newer hospital. These buildings appear to have been all but forgotten, the way nature has taken them back is incredible. There's one villa plus a few large greenhouse structures and associated buildings left standing from what I can tell.

Afterwards we explored the various closed bits of the more modern hospital and I have to say I preferred this place even though I was eaten alive by insects.

The load bearing tree in the first couple shots is epic! Pretty sure it is in the UE construction code....

Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.
