Recently, this made the news in Portland: people exit manhole! Wow, what are they doing down there?! Disturbing! Suspicious! Beware! How dare they, and why?!

Have a gander and a giggle, and be careful where you come up if you're exploring drains in the area.

Best to keep a low profile and not be seen whenever possible.
After 911 things changed a lot... unfortunately.

Yeah it's also a REALLY nice thing to put the cover back, god dammit. Just because you're sketched out and exiting in an obvious place doesn't mean you should create a fall hazard.

As for 911, I always calm myself down by thinking, "oh, we're not that scary looking, I mean come on we're holding cameras" - but I spend enough time listening to scanners to know people will call 911 about anything.

Peoples reactions to exploring are really funny sometimes. I was talking to a friend of mine who was asking how I get into places. He explained to me the ninja burglar techniques that I use and how I leap through windows after I smash them while evading police. Keep in mind he had had a few drinks before this. Whenever I tell people that I literally just open doors and climb through the occasional pre-smashed window they're amazed.

That group of 5 leaving the manhole open was pretty stupid. Blackhawk is always saying how exploring at night could easily lead to an unseen open cover, and now I see how. People are really lazy I guess.

The first set were only wearing what looked like tennis shoes, and the second group were barefoot? In a sanitary line? Not very intelligent.

Certain situations require popping lids and that practice has a it's own etiquette, mostly centered around safety (and stealth). Leaving a lid ajar is a good way to get somebody hurt/killed, and your secret tunnel kvlt membership revoked!

This is an industrial area away from bars with almost no pedestrian activities and related drunken craziness. Tossing a shoe onto a conspicuous area of someone's property is a good way to attract attention. That shoe was what prompted them to check the video.

Rock dumb stupid... that's a damn nasty soup of infections. Only thing worse than doing that is falling and getting a big mouthful.

I've often wondered what people would think if they spotted me entering/leaving drains. I generally wear a high vis vest and hardhat though to try and look somewhat 'official'
