A School Trip to Detroit

Whilst in Detroit, myself, The Up Kid, Essex and Kil.lill managed to explore a staggering 14 schools over the two and a half days we had criss-crossing the city. It becomes less staggering when you realise that number barely scratches the surface of the abandoned schools scattered around Detroit.

Some were crap, some were decent and a few were really very very nice. I won't say much and just let the photos do the talking, my personal favourite schools were all done towards the end of the trip though. Some are schools you may recognise, and some you may not.

An amazing trip, in the best company a foreigner could ask for.

Crazy. That's impressive. The auditoriums, gyms, and pools rock!

What was the goal of what to find whole spending so little time in each spot?

Essex and Lil only really wanted to shoot the auditoriums and gyms/pools, I however tried to get around them as best as I could in the time we had. We didn't really rush them as in a lot of the schools the only real points of interest are the aforementioned features and maybe a corridor or two as the classrooms 90% of the time are just stripped and empty so get very samey after a while!

Maybe it's just because I haven't near the locations behind me as you, but I am never satisfied until I have seen every corner of a location. Until I see it all, I feel like I have to keep going back....

Was the best weekend trip I think I've ever had, and will have until I'm back over next year!

Lol, I'm like that myself...there are even some places where I could take a thousand pics, see every inch of it, and still feel that need to return.
Mookster, these are beyond awesome, congrats on such an amazing explore trip! Love some of the architecture, the colorful murals, and of course the auditoriums & the pools! I could look at stuff like this for hours...and probably will...
Thanks for sharing, great job y'all!

This is a great catalog of these institutions. It really highlights the individuality of each building and the personal touches added by their students and staff. Great work all around, and I can't wait to see what else you saw while you were over here.

Also, has anyone ever made a tally of abandoned Detroit schools, or Detroit abandonments in general?

Im sure the amount of buildings we have seen played a factor in us not spending too much time in each. Between the 4 of us I think its safe to say we have shot over 1000 different places. Dozens of similar hallways don't do much for me. Im all about focusing on the highlights as Mookster mentioned. That being said I appreciate the nuances between similar areas in different places more by not trying to photograph them and just appreciating them in person. In addition I knew Mookster would be documenting things more thoroughly then me, which takes the pressure off!

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Great shots all the way around bud! I think we did twice as many schools that weekend as I have done in the last year!

What a whirlwind of a trip! 14 is a lot of schools to cross off the list. I hit the town a few weeks after you did and only managed about 6.

Knowing that it's likely that both my parents may have been in some of those hallways & classrooms as students in the 1940s/1950s, and my grandmother may have taught in those classrooms 1940s-1970s plus my mother may have taught in them in the 1960s really gives me goosebumps.
