Security Camera

Hi guys,

I was wondering if those types of camera are linked to a security company, or directly to the building (so if the building is abandoned, security cameras are not 'operational' anymore).

I found a way in, but it kind of asks me to spend a minute or 2 at the front door, just below these cameras.

Thanks.

Humm, okay. But what does that mean? Do you have some information about this type of security?

Ask Max Powers, our resident expert on security cams...
What could go wrong?

It's impossible to tell about the cameras with just that picture. Some prisons still have full security measures, cameras and everything, just no one there to watch for people. I say go for it if it's not in an urban area. If it is urban, go for it but be careful of people and have an exit planned.

I sure hope that 2 minutes at the door isn't for picking the lock.

You can always check the electric meter and see if there’s any juice registering...

If there's a meter, it's likely an active account.
Otherwise the meter is removed and it's plated.
And there can be multiple feds/meters...

Many security cameras are not monitored, and the footage is only looked at if something bad happens and the owners need to see it after the fact. Of course, it's difficult to tell if you don't know whether there are any guards.

Because that's breaking & entering, a decidedly more criminal charge than simple trespassing. Not sure where you're located, but around here you're going to be in substantively more trouble if caught inside a building with lock picks.

In my experience if you've got to pick the lock it's not worth it. I'd keep an eye on it and wait for someone else with less to lose to do the dirty work.

I think it's a pretty gray area. Because, I read that it's only B&E if you came with a crime intention (stealing stuff, deteriorating the place, etc...). I guess it's hard to prove, but if you just come to take pictures, it can be fine.

From Canadian law:

The offence of break and enter encompasses situations where the accused was trespassing or attempted to trespass on private enclosed property with an intent to commit an indictable offence

Source: https://en.wikiboo...es/Break_and_Enter

And given that's abandoned buildings, it's more difficult to prove that you came to steal some stuff. I feel like they might just ask you to leave.

Picking a lock -is- criminal intent; burglary.

I don't think so.

Burglary Definition: Breaking and entering a residence for the intention of committing a crime.

Burglary to me is when you enter with the intent of stealing.

Meaning that the breaking is not the crime to me, otherwise, the definition is redundant.
To me, the breaking is not the crime, it is what you do (or your intentions) when you are inside that can cause you trouble.

Get some take-out-food tubs (or any opaque/translucent container/box that's just big enough) and put some double-stick tape on the inside edges of it. Go up to the cameras with your face concealed. Apply and quickly leave. No damage, nothing that can be argued as vandalism with a straight face. Just easy-to-undo obscurement.

Come back the next day to see if somebody removes it.

Edit: If you pick a lock, you will be subjecting yourself to B&E charges even if you don't do a thing otherwise. What you don't understand is that the power in the current criminal justice system is largely biased toward the police and prosecutors, and less-so the courts. The police and/or the prosecutors can screw you without any hope of winning in court if they feel like you were doing something they don't like (oftentimes that thing they don't like is a real wrong, sometimes it's just them being pissed at you for fucking with them).

I know of friends who were charged for B&E with nothing even close to a tool in their possession. They ended up bailing out of their exorbitant bail with bond that they're all on the hook for. Then the charges were dropped. And so goes $15k.

Every place I've worked the cameras are wired directly to the building and employees or designated employees can access the cameras from a computer inside the building. My buddy who is a business owner can access the cameras at his business from his cell phone. If someone sets off a camera an alert goes directly to his phone. Security companies don't have the resources to monitor every camera they have wired so they only monitor alarms and contact the police/business owner if an alarm gets set off. If the building is abandoned, I would assume the cameras are no longer operational.

Cheers,
CMF
