Hello peeps, Im interested in knowing what you guys do for work or what career path you have chosen in life that enables you to explore?

I was a line cook for a while an had work a couple odd jobs here an there, longest was 4 years at UPS, but due to unfortunate events and my goal to always look for a better opportunity for myself I have found myself unemployed ironically, but thats not gonna stop me from exploring, so with that being said what do you do an how did you end up with that position/ career?

after dropping out of college in 1992, I drifted into automotive tech school... made me not want to be a mechanic. Holy shit... I worked as an injection molding tech (fancy name for brainless manufacturing drone), went on to work as buffing tech (lol), electronic assembler, extrusion molding tech, telecom installer, worked at a DOL Job Corps center as a driver, worked in Tennessee in an automotive interior systems plant, moved on to working for an outdoor power equipment company as a tech support rep, worked back at that same Job Corps center as a residential advisor, driver and then security, went to work at an autoparts store and then got hired at International Paper in Ticonderoga, NY where I worked for about 11 years and retired. I worked all over that fucking mill... machine room, pulp mill, recausting plant, warehouse, and finishing room. I retired in 2016.

Rocky Rococo, Burger King, high school drop out, Taco Bell (quit after 4 hours), gas station and Burger King(again), rock "star", back to high school, Power Generation Equipment Repair (52D) US ARMY, pet store, hardware store (small engine shop), college certification for HI/LO pressure boilers/HVAC, building engineer for a Catholic girls high school/convent/day care, building tech for the Cousin's Center (Archdiocese of SE Wisconsin), brainless assembly line drone building generators, equipment builder/field service tech for a dairy equip manufacturer.

Life had been shit - tired of busting my ass and making dirt. Wised up, went to night school while working full time PLUS part time weekends, rec'd BA in Electronics Engineering in 3yrs.

Maintenance mechanic for a wet wipe/liquid filling company, Engineer for a wet wipe/liquid filling company (competitor of prior), Electrical Engineer for a blow molding equip manufacturer, Engineer for a wet wipe/liquid filling company (back to the former), for the last 9yrs I have been an engineer for a global industrial controls company. I am currently a Sr. Project Engineer working in R&D with servo motors, drives, and controllers (PLCs).

After being a job whore all the way into my late 30's, I am finally at a job/company where I am no longer actively seeking other employment. I will retire here.

It took a LONG time but long hours at shitty jobs, sleepless nights, and strong mental focus on a goal turned living on the shit side of town with the cockroaches and riding the bus, to a house, car(s), and lots of gas and/or electric hungry toys.

It would make me so angry when I would bitch to my old man about how hard life is, and he had no sympathy. All he would ever say is "what are you doing to change that?". Turned out his question was the answer, and the only holding me back was ME.

I work at a building supply company my family owns. I'm a jack of all trades. I work in the office and outside, build orders, unload trucks, stock the material, drive our trucks, do maintenance on the buildings, etc.... its afforded me the opportunity to get to know my area really well, the buildings and the people. Pretty soon though I hope to move to Philadelphia to start doing hazmat remediation.

So many things. Food service at an amusement park, horse stall cleaner to get free lessons/time with the horses, started college and withdrew, coffee, more coffee, coffee again (kept getting poached for making good foam), started college again. Dog kennel manager, bird minder (lasted 3 hours), materials hauling office assistant/dispatcher/accident photo taker, finished the degree finally, direct commissioned sales (worst one on the whole list thus far and the only one that demanded I have a degree), temp benefits admin, temp receptionist turned into executive assistant turned into admin supervisor turned into current job managing a medical clinic for an organization I actually like and support.

Easy is a fairytale.

I've worked in a catering service, with a landscaping company, as a videographer/photographer, as a sports writer, as a Resident Advisor, as a clothing brand representative, as a carpenter, as a model, and my personal favorite, as a ranch hand on a rodeo farm.

I'm in college to be a doctor, but I still work four of those jobs year round and pick up one or two more for the summer.

Graduated from college with an engineering degree in building systems technology. I've been working in engineering firms for 19 years, as an HVAC systems designer. My specialty is plumbing systems, mostly drainage.

I'm also the leader of our local Illuminati branch.

I do a boring stockroom/yard/warehouse job for a family run independent department store.

It keeps me employed (for now), and I work Monday-Friday with weekends and public holidays off which allows plenty of time for exploring.

I'm a researcher and cataloger for an auction house specializing in autographs and militaria, which means my History degree is miraculously paying for itself.

Before that I was a "Guest Services Ambassador" (read: customer service drone) at the aquarium in Baltimore, and before that an intern for the education office at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. In college I worked part-time at the school library, and in a warehouse during the summer.

I work in stage lighting; I've never had a single job outside of the entertainment industry. It's strange how similar it is to urbex; you wear all black, you have to be at least a little bit crazy to do it, and depending on what you're into, you might end up climbing to ridiculous heights.

THere's some awesome origin stories in the thread. Props to those who have climbed themselves.

I went to ASU to major in Civil Engineering. Majored in Psychology instead.
Paid for college throwing newspapers. Kept throwing after graduating - where else is better for an social anxiety introvert (grocery shopping in the middle of the night is the only way to shop)? My younger sister made me quit for my own good but didn't tell me what other job to get. Started playing mechanic and upgrading friend's Jeeps. Shipping store shop owner noticed me shipping a lot of parts from ebay- asked me to sell for him. I was down to pocket change so sure why not. Owner later learned I started making flyers for my church (just because nobody else was) and asked if I'd design for him. I said ok, if raise. That owner tried to kill himself not once but twice which kept adding more responsibilities on me which required more raises. We became full fledged printing store, got a sign department. The owner sold and I went with the building. Was told to fire the sign guy so I took that over too (another raise). That owner got locked out- a new owner took over (I came with the building). Then that owner got locked out (a couple months into my marriage to my wife who only did volunteer work) and I said fuck this. I remote downloaded all the customer files then was let back into the store by the property owner for "personals." I filled two vehicles with things. I've been running my own graphic design and printing from home for about 6yrs now.
I will say, God knows I operate best when the rug is pulled out from under me. Therefore, I do not complain (ok, I try my best not to complain) when this happens anymore. This method is also how I ended up with my wife and most recently my home. I'm trying not to be as controlling and more generous as a result.
