Sometimes you see something and think 'how the hell is that possible?'.

Causeway Lodge in the east of England is one such place. It had been on the exploring circuit for a number of years and I had never found the time to visit it as it was always just slightly too far away from other places to make the detour to, however recently I found myself a short distance away so thought sod it I might as well finally see what sort of state it was in after all this time.

I can remember years ago seeing photos of it with part of an exterior wall fallen away however nothing prepared me for what I saw rocking up to it, especially as all the undergrowth and trees that blanketed the buildings have been cut away in preparation for demolition so it sticks out like a sore thumb to everyone going past now.

Quite how this building is still standing upright I have no idea. An entire gable end wall has fallen away, plus half the front wall of the building. The whole building is leaning forwards at an alarming angle, and it looks as if you could give it one slight push and everything will collapse. Not only that but the decorative low garden walls around the house are suffering the same fate with them cracked and sat at crazy angles, and solid concrete hardstanding areas outside one of the barns has sunk in the middle and split in two. The subsidence extends all the way out to the main road that goes past the front of the site, with areas of that sunk and pitted as well. I can only guess the entire plot is sat on what could only be described as sand. It's an incredible sight to behold and I rarely, if ever, flatly refuse to go into somewhere but decided for my own personal safety to decline the obvious ways in.

Strangely there was a 1960s bungalow building next to the house and the floors in there were rock solid, whether they had remedied the underground fault before they built that I don't know.

Holy balls that's a lot of crumble! Nice pics!

Great location and set of pics! This is definitely one of the most precarious-looking buildings I've ever seen, it looks like it's caught in a freeze-frame as its collapsing.

It looks like a doll house around back.

We're gonna get there. We don't need a whereabouts.
