| | | | Yet Another Short Video... < on 9/13/2004 9:45 AM >
| | | Once again, I've taken a break from homework (even though I know damn well I shouldn't) to do some photo/video work with Apoxx in the fine city of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Tonight was all experimentation with timelapse and long exposures, and once I returned to my house I just had to start putting things together in Windows Movie Maker, the greatest piece of free software in existence. Gary Jules' "Mad World" was playing in the next room, and before I realized it, it was 4:30 AM and I had just finished another sample intro to the short film I have in mind; the one I hope to complete before the end of this semester. The opening timelapse is courtesy of Apoxx, his EOS 10-D, and a Sigma wide angle lens of some kind. The rest was all done with my Canon A-80. Allow me to apologize in advance for the poor quality; the original file I ended up with was over 23 MB, so I had to save it the best I could for 13 MB so friends of mine with slow connections (and perhaps some of you) can download it without too much trouble. It's 1:49 long, could have been longer but WMM likes to crash on me due to lack of sufficient memory and I had to uninstall Premiere because it was a bad copy and gave me too many headaches. Anyways, enjoy. http://www.midnightgroup.org/best_sound.wmv

| | | Thanks for the input, glad you liked it. It does have a plot, its actually based on a short story I wrote a few summers ago. It's about life, and like c_c said, life is depressing sometimes but it's almost always beautiful no matter what the circumstances.

| | | I enjoyed the video, especially the beginning car scenes -- very well done. The beginning sets the mood very well, and I like the confusing/unifying aspects of the cut-out words appearing, and then forming into other sentences. That was classy. Constructive criticism: 1) The tilt-up where you see all the photos, you should use a tripod, move slowly, and (if possible) use many more photos and make them into more of a collage. That way you get more of an overwhelming effect, like "wow, look at all those old times where the people pictured are having fun... now they're just images on a wall," etc. (I'm sure that you probably just used them the way they were already on the wall, just to see if the effect looked cool, and it definitely does work.) 2) As with #1, if you're planning on using the shot with the JD bottle, maybe have some other "wreckage" strewn about, since someone who has pounded a bottle of liquor usually doesn't care how/where the bottle falls, you know? (Maybe even get a friend to leave a hand on the bottle... but that all depends on the larger story you're going for.) 3) Don't get too far beyond the objects you're panning/tilting before getting to the next shot, or else people will think there's more coming. This happens most pronouncedly (is that a word?) with the photos, but a little bit with the sink (nice shot, by the way -- very disconcerting without being disturbing). It just makes people anticipate that another object (possibly something even more interesting than what they just looked at) is going to appear in frame, and then it's slightly disappointing when it doesn't. If you transition just as the object is leaving the frame, though, it keeps people's interest up, like, "oh, here's another part of the story... can I figure out what's going on here?" Like I said, you've got a great concept and a lot of good ideas for cool shots to do. Is this for a video production class? (I assume not, since you said you were taking a break from homework to do it.) Is there anywhere on your campus that you could show the final work (if you wanted to)? P.S. -- Sorry for the long post. Thanks you

Ah yes. My tripod was outside in my truck, it had since begun raining, and the three shots I did in my basement were completely last minute. I actually had about 25 photos with me, but I ran out of Scotch tape and I couldn't find anything else for the life of me. Besides, it was already 3-4 AM and I had to be on the other side of campus by 8, so I was cutting a few corners. Especially since the .avi mode on my A80 is poor enough before you throw in the quality loss through compression, etc., a tripod alone would have made the entire thing that much better.
2) As with #1, if you're planning on using the shot with the JD bottle, maybe have some other "wreckage" strewn about, since someone who has pounded a bottle of liquor usually doesn't care how/where the bottle falls, you know? It scares me that we think so much alike. The scene actually calls for broken glass and other "debris," and I had actually given serious through to shooting it in a certain ruined structure near my home in the Minneapolis area. Tha hand in the shot wou;dn't fit the whole idea I have in mind.

I agree with you 100%. But like I said, I was running with an idea (why do I always become inspired at 3am?) and Iended up not finishing until almost 6. If I were to do it again, I'd definitely cut them shorter.
Like I said, you've got a great concept and a lot of good ideas for cool shots to do. Is this for a video production class? (I assume not, since you said you were taking a break from homework to do it.) Is there anywhere on your campus that you could show the final work (if you wanted to)?

Actually, it was for a class, kind of. It's a basic level digital video class, and my assignment for the weekend was just to gather random footage so I could start learning how to edit today. My first day showing up to the class (probably the third or fourth day), they were learning how to turn on the cameras. So basically, I wanted to put something together to show the prof that I kind of have a grip on things already (I've used Premiere a bunch, some analog) so I wouldn't have to do the piddly things and I could get class credit for finishing this "Blue" idea. Her answer is pending.

Oh no, I appreciate the comments. Have you joined the Video board that c_c started? I thought there was another one here already but I'm most likely mistaken.

I am interested to see what the final product of this video will be like. Do you plan the whole thing to be more experimental (like the car shots and the non-sequitur blood-in-the-sink pan), or will it be more of a narrative? Either way it looks interesting.

I have a similar problem of misplaced inspiration. I am always inspired with ideas for articles or screenplays as I am driving to work... mere moments before any creative urges are stifled by the crushing insanity which is my workplace.

Ugggghhhh... there's nothing worse than a required class of stuff you already know to do. Usually, though, profs are flexible and will allow you to either do creative things for your required assignments, or (depending on their personality and whether they have tenure or not) will cut you some slack and let you just do cool stuff all the time, as long as you come see them now and then (office hours aren't just for sucking up -- profs like people who have skills to come visit them, because they get tired of dealing with punks jerks students who have no desire to learn and are just in college for the pot and/or because Mommy and Daddy are paying). So, yes, I encourage you to take this up with the professor. Maybe she'll have some good suggestions once you describe the idea more fully to her. -- Mat

Actually it was old jello shots in the sink...but that was the effect I was going for I plan on it being more of a narrative; like I said, it's somewhat based on a short story i wrote in high school. If you would like a copy of this story to get an idea of what I'm talking about, I can email it to you as a .rtf or a .wpd (I curse Dell for not offering me Microsoft Word at a reasonable price, the bastards).
