I was finally able to explore this old high school after having it on my agenda for awhile...and I'm glad I did. Though partially fire damaged, this was a very colorful place with many leftovers, and quite a bit of it was left victim to only the decay of time.
At one point, I noticed a county cop car sitting outside, skulking around on the property (while I was most definitely NOT skulking around inside). I was in a pretty visible position, had he been looking, so I slowly began to move across the school and back to my car...while still taking pics. I got back with no incident, and waited to see what he would do...eventually, he left. I HATE parking on site, but I'd found a rather inconspicuous area to 'hide', but at that point decided to park in a lot next door, having been able to find someone there who told me it was okay, then continued my explore.
From what I've found, this school started as a 1-room schoolhouse in 1900, for all black students. Up into the 50's it would grow into a large segregated high school, able to accommodate 600 students. In the 60's the school was integrated, and would shut down in the 80's. It now sits abandoned, still a place locals remember fondly. I found out (while gaining my parking permission) that the fire happened well after the school had closed, about 4-6 years ago.
I hope you enjoy these shots as much as I enjoyed taking them, this was a great way to finish 2018!
