2018 Year in Review: Mines, Motels, and a bucket list trip

2018 was a pretty incredible year for adventures. There were some amazing highlights, and I fulfilled my goal of getting out and shooting as much as possible - and definitely saw some improvements with the way I shoot and the way I think about my work. Two main bodies of work started to emerge this year - documenting mining towns and headframes, and documenting motels and other relics from the time where we were more apt to take a road trip instead of flying/RVing.

I also completed a bucket list item - visiting the Yukon (Dawson City and driving part of the Dempster Highway - I will return in a couple of years to complete the trek from Dawson City to Tuktoyaktuk, NWT). I flew into Edmonton, AB and picked up a rental vehicle, driving to Dawson City, YT and back in just under two weeks. We doubled the rental vehicle's mileage. It's the single best thing I've ever done, and photos cannot do the Northern Rockies/Yukon proper justice.

Comments, etc. always welcome!

Mines and Mining Towns (documenting headframes and mining towns across Northern Ontario)
*the large piles/oddly coloured 'ponds' near mining operation are tailings, which is the waste by-product of the refining process. They are often toxic and contain high levels of elements such as arsenic. The bright orange streams that can be found around mining operations - particularly nickel - is acid mine drainage.
Fun fact: blueberries grow rampantly around Sudbury because of the highly acidic soil in the area due to the environmental disaster that the area is/was.

Rarely do I like it when there's light leaks/issues with my negatives, but I think in this specific photo it ended up working out.

Thanks! It's been a fantastic year for getting out and trying to think outside of my box - which included shooting more than just the abandoned stuff I see.

Thanks for looking!

I don't have a photo of it myself, but I also did the infamous Sourtoe Cocktail while in Dawson. It doesn't fit in the original post but I can't not mention it.

Yes, it is an actual toe.
