A Year in Ruins - 2018 in Review

It's that wonderful time of year now when we look back at all we have accomplished and achieved during the last twelve months. I managed to squeeze in one last little explore just before Christmas and currently have no plans to get out again before New Years Day so here is my (fairly lengthy) roundup of the year that was 2018.

I just missed out on the triple-figure tally of explores by the narrowest of margins, however I saw some incredible stuff this year. I saw some places I had wanted to see for years as well as revisiting one or two I last shot years ago. Among the amazing places there were of course the more mediocre ones but that's all part of exploring - it can't be epic all the time. As well as that I also found and documented even more car graveyards in my continued quest to shoot as many as I can, them being my number one favourite subject to shoot. We enjoyed (or endured) a long incredibly hot summer period which was fantastic to explore in but at times became unbearable, and a total contrast to the miserable freezing cold and snow covered late winter period at the beginning of the year.

An overall brilliant year, next June marks the ten-year anniversary of my exploring so I can't wait for that milestone to come.

I hope you enjoy this look back at my exploits this year, I think I only posted about half of the places on here so there will be a fair amount of stuff you may not have seen unless you're on my Flickr!

No surprises here.... Mookster always crushing it. I have seen my share of abandoned train tunnels, but never one with train cars in it. That was cool. Thanks for the share!

Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.

Excellent work as always! Looks like you hit just about every genre of abandonment there is, and portray all of them very well.

Beautiful collection. Love seeing the year in review threads roll out in December, inspiring to see just how many people in this community get out there and live such consistently adventurous lives.

Truly inspiring...before this year I've done a few explores, but have really gotten into urbex this last year. Since about March of 2018, I've done just under 40 locations (some more successful than others), and I'm hoping 2019 will be even better. I'm glad to have found this site and the awesome people here who are willing to offer their experiences and guidance...
This is a great collection, hard to pick a favorite, though I do love that tank...and of course the hospital shots! Thanks for sharing the exploits of a successful year, and good luck in the next!

You have a way with lighting that makes everything seem so real, like I can imagine I'm standing right there. Incredible work as always.

Cheers all, I like looking back on all I've achieved too. Things went from the sublime to the ridiculous this year with some amazing places, rubbish places, places that should be difficult being super easy and places that should have been easy being challenging and stressful - #17 will stick in my mind as one of the most unpleasant access routes I've ever had to take.

I've got too many favourites from this year to narrow it down, I can't pick just one place that I loved above all others.

I did see quite a few, most of them were in #20 ha...one place I had wanted to see for years. I think most of the ones I saw over here were still LHD.

I've always tried to do exactly that with the way I take my photos. I don't edit them (other than occasional cropping/straightening) due to me not having spare time - if I had to edit everything I took I'd be lucky to get anything else done - I'm usually shooting one stop below where my camera says is the 'correct' exposure (ie in the centre of the line), it sometimes helps with stopping the sky becoming too blown out and I think it looks more 'as I see it' a lot of the time.

The formula is right for a perfect trip, that's for sure. If we can round up a few more bodies to fill out the group there will be no stopping us!
