This is the most architecturally interesting building I've ever been in. the neighborhood it is located in used to be a working class Slovakian neighborhood. in 1902, the neighborhood decided that they would want their own place of worship. although the neighborhood was poor, they were able to bring in the $2,500 needed to start a parish. the first masses took place in a rented room in a physicians office. in 1903, they built their first church. the school was originally on the second floor, but in 1913 Vaclav A. Chaloupka, who worked with the church until he died 47 years later, thought they should have a school building that would double as a community center for the surrounding area. through out the years, there would be movies related to the Slovakian folk hero Janosik and visiting Slovak bands and dance troupes. in 1926, they built a new church building. the one that remains. in the 20's the building was filled to capacity every mass. but in the 1950's, people stared leaving the neighborhood and the church suffered. by 1972, they had closed the school. in 1984, the last pastor left. the stained glass windows were removed in 1990 and brought to a church in a neighboring city. although the church had a parishioners, it closed in 1992. the building was bought and used until 2010. its pews disappeared sometime during the 2017-2018 winter. it is not known what happened to them. the church is now in extreme disrepair and parts are collapsing. it wont be long until the beautiful hand pantined ceiling collapses into the sanctuary.

We begin with the school.

Great pics! This location looks amazing! Hopefully it's still standing the next time I head back to the Midwest.
