The more posts I read, the more it makes me appreciative of how hard it is to explore in Toronto. I am also appreciative that I didn't have social media as an influence to how I explore.

why don't you just go up to peoples houses and ask if you can come in and explore with permission, photograph their clutter, any peeling paint, you might even make some new friends that can turn you on to any local bandos, tell them you and your crew are down with that too...

I have to say, it seems UE videos are rather unfairly target in regards to "giving away locations". If you poke around other UE photography groups online you'll see MANY photographers have no problem putting the name and location right in the title of their photographs. Oftentimes detailed conversations ensue in the comments sections that give away every little detail anyone could want to know. In my opinion, since video represents such a small percentage of UE work in general, it is not the main source of the problem.

Indeed, there are plenty of UE videographers out there who are respectful of locations and discreet with information. By that same token, there are plenty of photographers on Instagram and Facebook who can say the same. The problem isn't the platforms themselves, it's the people who don't understand why protecting locations takes priority over getting likes.

Those platforms may have made urbex more accessible to the masses and allowed many of the newer explorers to avoid the guiding influence of the preestablished community regarding exploring ethics, but that doesn't make the platforms themselves inherently bad, nor all who use them inherently indiscreet.

None of this shit matters at the end of the day, these places are fucked no matter what any of us do or no matter how much we follow these unwritten rules and standards.

Just as there are thousands of explorers out there looking for places to explore there are just as many even more scrappers and even more stupid local kids looking for a place to fuck around and smash shit...and they can call find spots the same way that we do.

And nevermind kids and scrappers, I was just in an abandoned jail in Ontario, Canada that was pristine just over a year ago and then the army started using it for training and they blew the place to shit worse than any scrapper of vandal could ever imagine.

Fucked no matter what

As much as everyone loves to blame the evil social media and Instagram and YouTube, places are fucked regardless.

I don't disagree that it may speed up the damage or whore a spot out faster....that just means that those of us who are serious about the hobby need to try harder to find the new spots or get to the new spots BEFORE this shit happens. We have to try harder and put in the work.

Just my $.02

The rest of those things are out of our control. If you recognize that blowing spots speed up their destruction, why not at least do what you can to help prevent that part of it?

Oh I do, for the most part and I'm not defending anyones actions. I hate the sloppy ones with loose lips as much as anyone else.

I've just seen spots get ruined that had not even been on social media just as fast as those that have.

Well this new generation of explorers (my generation, technically?) is about to get a whole new platform.

Insight TV Signs YouTube Stars Josh and Cody to Front New Social Influencer Adventure Show Urban Explorers

MIPCOM 2018, Cannes, France – Stand R8C19 – 15 October 2018 - Insight TV, the world’s leading UHD 4K broadcaster and producer of native UHD content, has announced exciting new cast updates to its social influencer adventure show, Urban Explorers. Insight TV has secured YouTube sensations and professional urban explorers Josh and Cody as the show’s team leaders. Scheduled to premiere on Insight TV and Insight.TV in 2019, the show has 10x44-minute episodes.

Having made an exclusive selection of 20 of the most spectacular abandoned locations on the planet, Josh and Cody and their teams will visit them and will rank them based on four criteria of urban exploring. In each episode they invite a different exploring partner from around the world to join their team and help them in their quest. Each partner has their own urbex background and skillset and once they’ve met their team leaders, they head for their location.

In this up-close and personal adventure, the teams grant the audience an exclusive look into the world of urban exploration and their methods. They’ll visit different countries, cultures, obstacles and dangers, and meet people connected to the location’s history. Each episode builds towards the climax, the arrival at and exploration of the abandoned locations. The teams will show and document everything they find, taking pictures along the way.

I explore for the ability to look where you are not normal allowed. I love to touch and wonder thru history. I take pictures but rarely post as it is just a hobbie (the exploration not the photos). But It seams that Thinking past the next like is something beyond most people theses days.

Even though I can't say I'm thrilled about the additional media attention, I hope that they provide a more accurate look at urban exploration then that edgy rooftop stunt featuring Red Bull sponsored "urbex" show a year or two back did.

They probably won't, though.

Each episode will see the social media sensations partner with a new urbex pro to explore a hidden treasure around the world and rank it based on four criteria of urban exploring

I can't WAIT to see who these 'urbex pros' are!

Also, what the fuck is a criteria of urban exploring?

Sadly, this hits way too close to home. Lazy and inconsiderate YouTubers are a plague.

It's more than just YouTubers.

Even people that don't show entrance points that are lazy & inconsiderate will tell or swap with just about anyone

POE and location of any abandonment should definitely be kept off camera, in my personal opinion. It literally breaks my heart when I see beautiful abandonments that I have explored or haven't had a chance to explore get destroyed because people are idiots. Buildings get burnt down and vandalized all the time and it makes me so angry. At the same time though, with or without youtube videos guiding the way, there will always be idiots in the world who will see a building and then later decide they want to go back so.
