Ironically, I got a similar message from Amazon today. Apparently I'm no longer a prime member and my 147 GB of photos is a bit over their 5 GB limit. They've given my until Nov 16 to get down to 5GB or to pay up (I missed the first notice that was sent out 3 weeks ago). However, 1TB of storage at Amazon would cost me $125 CAD, so it looks like I'll be renewing my Flickr Pro account.

MySpace

MySpace is still alive for now. Subject to change with the wind direction.

What I fon't understand is why there are Facebook "Like" buttons on MySpace.

I did get the email for it, so I can say that they were sent out. They weren't completely underhanded in how they've handled this... mostly, though.

I received an e-mail when SmugMug took over, stating that there would be changes. However, it wasn't until now that said changes have been elaborated upon.

This has been the case for some time. There was a scandal of sorts that profile pictures were showing up in ads....

If you have the privacy level set fairly tight, they can't (according to them) use the picture. However, cover and profile pictures are always public.

Yes, i vaguely recall this happening several years ago. More to point, Facebook has a lousy privacy track record. Its been worse, or maybe just more public, recently. Their track record is one of the reasons i really don't use Facebook much, and dont use Instagram at all. I'm merely pointing out that when you use FB/IG, you should be aware of their licensing with regards to uploaded images ("what is yours, is mine", so to speak).

MySpace

Will see if it makes it through the recent purchase from the Koch Bros. to Marc Benioff (CEO, Salesforce).

Overall, the options kinda look like this to me:

* Another photo sharing site [500px, smugmug, or back to flickr]
* cloud storage service [google, amazon, dropbox]
* roll-your-own personal cloud storage apps [NextCloud, Owncloud, GlusterFS]

I'm really just leaning towards re-signing with Flickr, since its the lowest effort at the moment. Building out my personal cloud would require time/effort that I don't have right now. That might change in a year or two though. Will see.

I actually _don't_ see this mail anywhere in my archive. You got the headers? was it from <donotreply@flickr.com>? Wondering if they only sent it out to people that were up to renewal or something.

Just checked now and couldn't find the email, so I might have been wrong and just stumbled across it on their help forums when I was looking for something else.

To put it in perspective, $50 a year is a little under 14 cents a day. If you can afford mega money camera gear but can't afford 14 cents a day to host your photos, you're doing something wrong.

Sometimes it's not about the cost, but the value. For me, to have the price double with zero change to the features decreased the value to the point it was no longer worth paying. Especially since I already pay for my own hosting to run a website for my exploring stuff, and was just using Flickr more so as a random selection of everything I take photos of.

Just curious, what does that cost you per month, and is it easy to set up? I'd definitely go that route if it's cheaper than Flickr- plus the extra customization is a nice bonus.

It's not. I'm paying $100 for the hosting alone, and another $30 or so for the domain name. But, in this case, I already have an available domain I'm paying for which is currently just pointing at my Flickr.

But, once you have the hosting you honestly have a ton of flexibility. I can easily run three our four different sites off the hosting I have, just by pointing the domain names at different directories within my hosting, so it would cost me nothing at this point to launch a personal photo site other than time.

I had Flickr Pro from 2006/7 util they gave the free 1tb storage. Free was nice but is still how I like to store my photos online so I'll go back to paying.

Also who remembers the old flickr?

I'm thinking of playing around with Wix and seeing what I can do to make my own website. Supposedly it's a free website building site and hosting service, so if I can make my own website for free I'll gladly take the time to do it rather than pay $50 per year for what I already had with Flickr.

I was actually hoping the announcement would be access to FlickrMail via the app. Messaging was the #1 reason I migrated to IG.

I remember when Flickr didn't oversharpen your images. They used to look how you uploaded, no matter if viewed on Flickr or posted to a forum. Still angers me.

More than happy to pay the Pro subscription so long as my privacy is respected (which they claim might be the case) and the experience is ad-free.

I see why they did this. After their redesign several years ago, which made using Flickr cumbersome, most people used it as a dumping ground for all their photos, and not the best photos for the most part. It's difficult to monetise a free service in the day and age where ad blockers are prevalent and more people are (fucking finally) asking for privacy and what these companies do with their data.

That being said, fuck Facebook, and fuck Instagram (did you know it's also owned/operated by Facebook? Which is hilarious considering how many people "left" FB but still have Instagram accounts).

YAAY greeding corporations!

How do you figure this is "greedy"? They were generously providing a valuable service for free and are no longer doing it because they were losing money. The business model didn't make any sense, nor was it sustainable.
There's no such thing as a free lunch, nor is there a free Terabyte of hosted data into perpetuity. At some point someone has to pick up the tab for that - It's a commercial venture, not a charity.

I think this is unfortunate, and I understand why some people might be upset, but it's hardly unreasonable. Storage and hosting cost money and it's seriously naive to assume that a private corporation would subsidize your web hosting forever.

If anyone needs the extra online storage I wrote some software a while back that lets you generate multiple google accounts and then refer each of them to each other for google drive and then it uses all the google drive accounts to store what ever you want but does it in the background so you don't have to worry about login into each account. It just presents all your files in one folder on your desktop. I wrote it for windows only but if anyone wants it I'll look around and find it for you.

Who's greedy? The corporations or the people who expect them to give you everything for literally nothing?
