I know they do tours in Chernobyl. Have any of you guys been there? If so how restricted was the tour, and did you feel like it was worth the trip?

It won't be the same but you can do a virtual tour of Pripyat on Google Earth or USGS Earth Explorer, if you want some quick kicks.

Many people have. It has a pretty decent tourism industry going.

I have a friend (who's not even an urban explorer) who took a tour of Pripyat during a trip to Eastern Europe last year. He said they kept them on the beaten path, though apparently it isn't hard to slip away on your own if you're so inclined.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

I've been. There are a variety of different tours. Some more strict than others. Officially you can't enter any buildings

Edit: for those worried about radiation you will be exposed to more on the flight to Ukraine than in 2 days in the zone so long as you don't play around with super irradiated objects or lie around on the asphalt (bring a reader to avoid this, some tours provide them)

Don't go on a tour with a large group of 'tourists', you will get bussed around to all the typical tourbus stops and it'll be a lot more restrictive.

Arrange a private/small tour over a few days with a company such as Lupine Travel who are well connected with locals and guides. You technically aren't allowed to go into the buildings but pretty much every guide on a private tour will look the other way as they know that if you're on one of those you're a serious photographer and not just someone out for a jolly. They are also pretty receptive to a little bit of bribery as well which always helps.

Companies and or guides supply you with a meter for radiation readings as well as a walkie talkie in case you go off on your own which is allowed if you're in a small group.

Stay out of the undergrowth as although the general area is quite safe, shrubbery and trees and plantlife holds a lot higher concentrations of radiation than background.

I went about two years ago. We went on a 2 day tour through the tour group chernobylwel.com. Although the group was about 10 people, we were able to go through about 12-14 different sites (inside a kindergarten, school, supermarket, government building, fire station, police station,, ferris wheel, Durga, etc.). Part of that may have been because our guide Olexandr was very relaxed and let us go at our own pace. I know you can book a private tour and, although more expensive, probably gives you more leeway in seeing what you want to see. The radiation supposedly is minimal and the guides keep you out of the more dangerous areas. It was an amazing trip honestly, would highly recommend.

Some turned into mutants, then regressed to Insgm... or even FB.

A good counter be wise. Harmless looking things like peeling paint and layered rust can still be very radioactive. They say the abandoned vehicles are some of the worst especially around the plant.
Heavy fallout/irradiation produces an erratic radioactive landscape.
