The first two are dark. I would have waited for the sun to peek out a little. The light in the bottom two looks much better

Agreed - I didn't have a lot of time to wait around, and the weather in Scotland is notoriously uncooperative. But I know working with the light settings is something I'm definitely struggling with and trying to relearn.

Sunrise and set are the best times to shoot something like this. Sometimes you need to stake out your prize... and grab it at the right time.
Figure out the framing beforehand as you don't have much time to work with.
