If some place is active I typically stay away. Also places that are owned and operated by the federal government (even if abandoned) are a no. (There's an old school near me that the national guard uses as a training ground and a radioactive nuclear waste facility that I would never go near, even though the school is a frequent urbex spot.) Also I think its disrespectful to "explore" burial places or places where people had recently died. Also, exploring places with really expensive items (like the museum) is just too risky for me. The optics are too bad even if it would make for some great exploring.

Rooftops of obscenely tall buildings and the tunnels of obscenely deep mines. Going underground in general is a pass for me. Gimme an unstable, dilapidated structure any day. There's nowhere to run when you're already buried.

Personally, if the structure is in an unsafe condition (ceilings and floors caving in) I won’t enter. If it’s in a really bad neighborhood I’ll avoid it as well. I work for a utility in Cleveland and I’ve seen some real messed up shit in some of the neighborhoods. Also if there’s demolition in progress or if there is a high police presence I won’t make an attempt.

Personally, I won't mess with tunnels, caves, or drains. It's just not my thing.
Also, if a building has known squatters, bums, or gang activity I'll leave it alone to respect their privacy/not get myself murdered.
I try not to enter buildings that are seriously falling apart or seem ready to collapse.
I also usually won't mess with anything federally owned.

A 'spongy' floor or roof is usually instant "no bueno" for me. Almost fell through the 3rd floor of some type of housing or barracks building because I ignored my gut...last time I'm doing that.

Any place that might have...dolls.

Or even parts of dolls. Like, an arm. Or a head.

I do believe I'd be reduced to a gibbering pile of madness if I wandered into a room during an explore and found any dolls or doll parts laying around.

They're just very, very creepy.

Homes are off limits to me, but unused buildings and spaces are green for me. Also, not keen on hazardous places.

I'm fine with exploring truly abandoned houses, and in fact have explored my fair share. It's just that in certain cities (looking at you Chicago) exploring abandoned houses becomes a game of crackhouse roulette. In some areas it can be impossible to differentiate between the home of a poverty-stricken family, a crack den, or a truly abandoned house since all three look similar from the outside. Broken glass, peeling paint, overgrown lawns, and boarded up windows does not necessarily an abandonment make.

For me , a big percentage of why i explore is for the "experience", the intensity, the illegality, testing my limit, going the higher, the deepest, where the others say it's not doable or too risky.

I like challenges so what sould be off limits just is an invitation and a new puzzle to solve.

I do drains (sanitary too, well, it's almost all that we have here), cranes, rooftops, chimney, bridges, semi-active site, guarded/monitored places, gov owned property.

I will stop only when all the logic possibility to not get caught are spent.
but like i always say... "there is always a way"

It all depends on your fear of getting caught at some point and what you think it will happen and how good you are with social engineering and planning your infiltrations.

Ive been close to choke at some places but always ended up doing it.

The adrenalin can be a strong drug!

Only thing i dont do is houses, abandoned or for sale or watever... just because i thinks it's lame.

Active gov/military/jails I steer well clear of. Active houses are just unnecessary. In my 10-ish years of exploring, I've never had to break anything, or use any tools other than rope, to get in. Imo, it forces you to be more creative.

If it's a place I can get into legally, I don't see a point in sneaking into it.

I don't fuck with sewers, not that I haven't before, but it doesn't give me a lot of pleasure to walk through a smelly drain.

Certain transit tunnels and asbestos-laden basements are hard to justify at this age.

I also try not to fuck around too much with places of natural beauty. Cities are great places to break the rules while nature is a bad place to.

I'm claustrophobic as hell, so if exploring a place involves a lot of squeezing or crawling through tight spaces I'm out.

There's a part in Predator's draining guide about exploring small drain tunnels lying on a skateboard and honestly just reading it made me feel ill.

What is a chatiere? I've seen the term multiple places and the only definition I can find for it is "cat flap." Are Chatieres really small tunnels?

Indeed they are. The term comes from the cataphiles in Paris, when they dig interconnections to other systems or tunnels.

Occupied residential buildings and parking facilities with no exploration potential for the most part. Porch pirates and car prowls are a very major issue in my area and people are understandably apprehensive about people who have no business being inside the building especially if they've been victimized recently. Many people install Nest specifically for these reasons.

And its only going to get worse. The porch pirates you mention are a growing problem and UPS and USPS often just dump packages in plain view.

And being in a rural area doesn't preclude this I had a 1000rd case of .308 ammunition left at our gate by UPS in a box with the ammo company name on it in big letters! It got swiped. Spent the next couple months fighting with UPS to get my money back. FedEx seems to be a bit better and if you have stuff like that sent "signature required" sometimes they follow directions.

Ive installed a couple of door bell cams for friends and there are so many of these in use now the porch pirates are making their video debut!

If you just happen to be dressed similar to a previously filmed porch pirate in a poor quality video, there's a fair chance someone might pass around you/your crew as "potential porch pirate or prowler" around NextDoor or a community Facebook page.

Typical residential buildings aren't really exploration worthy and personally it's just best to avoid them.

Meh, I feel you.
Bums here will snatch anything that's not welded down if they see it.
If you live near the local UPS hub have it delivered at that hub and held for pickup.
I get my gars that way all the time.
