I enjoy writing more than I do photography, I'm going to admit that. With my laziness and poor camera skills yet to be honed this is what I give you; The cellphone. I have been going to my cottage all my life and at the ripe age of 29 finally got the courage to visit 2 of the abandoned cottages, both of which I have never seen anyone attend/enjoy. There were the jokes from my childhood from family members that anyone of those 3 would be where I would be sleeping that weekend or week and as a kid I would sit and pray my dad didn't start turning the family car down one of the driveways or aim the boat towards their docks (now sunken/floated away). All of this time visiting, from a child to my teens, my family would stress the importance of not visiting these places, but when passed in the boat or car, the conversations between the adults began. Who owns them, why hasn't anything been done with them, WTF? It took a lot of years and brainwashing but I had stayed away. I decided that the my usually turned off cellphone and pockets lined with my cold beers would be brought on a walk to finally get the curiosity bug (which may have been a dock spider) off my back. I "live" at least 5 away from "metal roof" and 4 from that would be "Blue Lou", the green one I will never go to and never will..It scares me. The metal roof definitely has had someone in there recently? Maybe since Sony DLP TV's? and Blue Lou definitely has not been opened in a long long time. Weird enough both have running electrical, no outside lights or anything, but Blue Lou has a humming fridge inside! What a waste right? I will leave this with a quote from my childhood, specifically when I suggested we go look at them . "Adam, you have to stay away from those cottages. They may not be taken care of but that is someone's property and you have to respect it...but can you get me and your uncle a beer on your way back down, thanks buddy" Enjoy.

Neat stuff. It seems like there's "that" iconic cottage that nobody has ever gone to on every lake. I checked my first one out a few years ago while up at Baldasarro's place. I always wondered what the response would be if you fixed one of these places up. You know, redo the deck, reshingle it, start using it season after season. And then suddenly when the owner shows up in 5 or 10 years and says, "What the fuck?" you say, "We knew what we were doing. We know it wasn't ours. We're sorry. Here's your new deck, new roof, clean and maintained interior. We promise that we're never coming back and, as payment, here you go."

But what if they never show up?

That's definitely weird... I've never seen a "This cottage is being checked by the OPP" tag... Seems like it would be a huge waste of their money if the owners aren't coming back to check on it or use it...

We have a cottage like that near my family's summer place too... Except it's on an island, and nobody has been there for several decades. Every summer I check on it but last year the dock cracked and rotted out so there's no easy way onto the island. Same story, too. Nobody knows who owns it, nobody has seen anyone there, etc.

Like I said there are always good discussions on who owns what, and so far the one that makes the most sense is the metal roofed one. Apparently it's owned by someone from town and they were approached by a builder/renovator who works specifically on cottages on our lake and he was told NO and never. But things can always change especially if the right number is thrown out there. The creepy green one and Blue are the ones that even the most senior of lake goers has any clue about.

That is a perfect idea, but I'm always thinking of the piece of shit that may know something about the place and run crying and tattling to somebody. Then you got an owner/township/government body acting like a baby and saying "MINE!" and yanking your dreams away.

Not in bad condition considering how long it's been abandoned!

What lake is it on?

Cottages like this are kinda common, and here's the gist of the situation, mor often than not: it was maintained/used mostly by the grandparents, who have since passed on/can't keep it up any more. So it'll sit there "abandoned" until the family sorts things out or the young 'uns get old enough to take it over. Seen it a number of times, personally.

I totally agree-so what if you toss away the price of a few nights at a shitty campground? And the "what if" is intriuging (sp)
