Suprize at the abondoned Sunco Fuels warehouse and office, Tampa

Driving home, I noticed a very abandoned building. It had a fence which had barbed wire in some places. But it was in very poor condition and the fence had some holes in it. The sign to the building was on the ground face down. There was no signs of life. It looked like it used to be industrial, it had some big tall roll up doors that you could have driven large trucks inside through. There was also an office building. The sign said "Sunco Fuels". I walked around inside for quit a bit.

The ground had 8 inches of standing water in some places from the rain.

At some point I flicked a light switch and a light came on! I couldn't believe it had power and something actually worked here.

I wanted to drive in and explore the many acres in my vehicle. So I walked to the automatic gate. I put my hand in front of the laser car detector thing. I heard it click but the gate didn't open. I messed with it for a really long time and was getting frustrated that I couldn't make it work. I can usually figure out this kind of stuff. It must be a simple fix. But I had been here over an hour. I decided to leave.

I looked at my exits: I could hop over the barb wire and walk the 500 yards back to my car. Or I could just walk around the long way where there was a much lower fence with no barb wire. I decided to do the long lazy walk back.

But then I heard a very big, loud dog bark. It was close! The image of a rototiller flashed in my head. I froze. I was in the middle of a large fenced off area. I knew I had to act quick. I found it hard to believe that I actually had to run for my life. But I forced myself to run back towards the close fence with the barb wire. I needed a plan quick. Then I heard a man yell, "GET 'EM BOY, GET 'EM!" I really didn't believe the man, somehow it sounded like he was scared, and just was hoping to scare me off. But I told myself, "Don't chance it, just run as fast as you can." I also started wondering where the hell did he come from?

I noticed that the gate opener machine looked perfect to help me over the fence. I stepped on to it and hoped over the old rusty barbed wire. I wasn't sure how well my jump would turn out, but I figured it was better than my chances with a big dog and a crazy homeless guy. To my surprise I landed perfectly on the other side. I ran towards my vehicle, pulling my keys out as I ran. It was now dark. I held my keys up while running trying to see which was the correct key.

I made it to my vehicle and slammed that door closed, hit the lock button, put her in "R" and backed out to the big road. I made it!

It embarrassing, but I did notice that I was already completely sweet soaked and smelled like a locker room. Must be some kind of adrenaline thing.

Lessons learned:
I decided to take everything off my keychain except my car key.
Next time I scare a bum I'm going to yell, "Hey, Man! They only had Bud LIGHT at the gas station! You want one." I bet that will disarm 90% of people.

P.S This is my first post, hope I'm not breaking any forum rules, and I'll have better pics next time.

Very interesting first post. While pictures can tell a lot about about an explorers time in an abandonment, a good story about one can sometimes be even better.

On a side note, you should err on the side of caution when an abandonment still has power, odds are that it's still semi-active. The man that you heard may very well have been a security guard, groundskeeper, or even the owner. Some places may appear to be abandoned, but are still used as a means of storage for the owner of the site.

Dog, eh? How you react when you hear humans nearby is one thing, but if you hear a dog it's best to get out of there as quickly as possible. Though, if it comes to drugged up squatters, then i'd rather deal with the dog!

But I digress. Welcome to the site!

This may be the end of the post, but you ain't seen the end of me!

Good first post and story to accompany! Running from dogs is something I've only done once, and hopefully only once...

Maybe don't post the co-ords in a public thread generally.

Welcome to UER and thanks for sharing your story.

What you describe here is what is on my mind most when out on an explore. Animals wild or tame are pretty high on my caution list and who knows what kind of people you might run in to while you're out.

It sounds like you were capable of thinking quick and getting out safe so that's cool.

What's not cool is posting the location coordinates in a thread. Please refrain from doing that in the future. We here at UER are protective of location information for reasons including but not limited to what's mentioned in the after mentioned thread. http://www.uer.ca/...=1&threadid=128513

Sorry for the mistake. I want to remove the coordinates, but I don't know how. The 'modify' button won't work because I posted it over 24 hours age.
