A Tariffic Time to Be A Steelworker (RIP: "Bunny" Ennis)

Last Friday at midnight, the new Trump-driven tariffs — 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum — officially kicked in, a move that is expected to make Canadians pay more for cars, refrigerators and beer (just to name a few). For decades, Canada has been the biggest supplier of steel and aluminum to the U.S., exporting nearly 90% of our product. That's more than any other country. But the Trump administration has cited rising national security interests, saying the U.S. military needs a domestic supply for its tanks and ships.

With the benefit of free trade lost, US demand for Canadian steel will drop, the price will rise and jobs will be lost, leading one University of Toronto economist to state, "Canada has been held hostage to American policy." In response, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross says, "Countries will get over this in due course."

This recent news got me thinking about Ennis Steel (Port Robinson) once more. Several years ago, I did an extensive photo set of the location. Recently, I noticed that the entire property has been converted into a giant holding yard for thousands of leftover vehicles from the Volkswagen Emission Scandal. Recently, the plant owner died just shy of being 100-years old.

The tariffs, the emission scandal, the death of "Bunny"... it stuck Ennis Steel in my mind and I knew I wouldn't be able to shake it out without a revisit to the location for the first time in years. This time I focused more on the front offices instead of the plant itself, as they had not been accessible on my previous visit.

______________________________________________________

"Bunny" Ennis, the previous owner of the location, did not live long enough to see either the end of free trade or his property sold to become a giant holding yard. He passed away on March 18, 2018 at the proud old age of 96. He is remembered as a real gentleman and very successful businessman in the steel industry. Despite being their boss, previous workers remembered him as having a great sense humour and a kind expression on his face at all times.

If you have any interest in seeing my previous post from this location, you can find it here: http://www.uer.ca/...urrpage=1&pp#post0

As if right on cue with this post, the news got even darker tonight. This is only the beginning... the trade war is coming.

A very good thread Ground State
Bunny sounds like a man I would have liked.

He said Ennis had a great sense humour and he remembers the kind expression on his face.

"He would always take time for a brief conversation even when I was just a kid … he always had time. There was usually a cigar in the vicinity of Mr. Ennis," said Campion.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

The puns are real! This thread intrigues me, because politics has given me a greater motivation to explore as well.

EDIT: As always, I love your photos, and the fact that you do them on a Canon Powershot is incredible!

In photo 09, did you look at the ceiling? Someone had managed to get not one but MULTIPLE sheets of paper ontop of the fan... Absolutely blew my mind.

This is also where I got the cops called on me by the neighbors because of "a recent uptick in scrappers". Luckily my group was let go with just a warning.

Great photos, this place is definitely one of the cooler ones in Southern ON.

That's a helluva compliment, because I grumble all the time that I don't have money to buy a good camera and I feel like I'm missing out. But then I see people on photography bases posting lenses for sale used for $1000 and reality settles in.

Damn, I scrolled back to #9 hoping that you meant it was in my photo and I missed the detail. I love when someone else looks at a photo you've seen a dozen times with your own biased perspective and they see something that you completely missed. Too bad... I didn't get to see that fan.

Unfortunately "was" is the operative word. Volkswagen has increased security here tremendously, surrounding the entire property with maintained barbed wire fencing and HD infrared video cameras with signs that indicate they are monitored offsite. For once, I don't think it is a bluff. I don't know what they plan on doing with all of these cars, but by rough estimate, there are two thousand of them. Even the buildings are full.

I got a variant of this bundle for $600:

(In addition to the camera and lenses, I got a camera bag and a remote shutter release)

While those lenses would not allow you the same zoom length as your Powershot, you would have higher-resolution photos with less grain, the option of capturing in RAW/.nef, and the potential to upgrade your lenses at a later point.

It was just in time, as I went back for a photo op that I missed only a week later and the conversion had already begun. VW has been snatching up all kinds of brownfield sites in southern Ontario to dump all their recalled vehicles.

I'm not sold on the zoom length anyway -- it is nice to get in close, but even with a tripod and timer countdown, there is still too much grain on a long-distance shot to be worth anything. I'd really love to buy a used package, but I don't feel confident enough that I'm not getting someone else's junk. I guess what I really need to do is find someone I know and trust to buy a used camera package from.

Great photos, and as for a camera try and get a full frame sensor if you can. Also your lenses are your money makers since you can always change a body.

I picked up a 60D some years ago now for ~$900. The 60D back then was the "high end" of the middle range (I think the current version is the 80D). It's long since outdated, but I still use it and don't feel the need for an upgrade. If you want to upgrade your camera but don't want to drop crazy money, as a hobbyist you would more than likely be fine with the Rebel series. You can get a kit on sale for ~$700 or less I believe.

Full frame is nice, and I would one day like to have a full frame DSLR, but $2000 on a body just isn't happening anytime soon. I would have to upgrade all of my lenses to full frame.

It's not the gear that makes the photographer, anyways.

My favourite camera is a 60 year old TLR that has a fixed focal length of 80mm (basically the equivalent to what your eye sees - not wide/zoom). It's also the camera that I've taken my favourite photos with.

/end unsolicited advice

Great shots!

Love the photos, it's such an interesting location!

Does anyone know how long the Volkswagen takeover will last?
