The thing I find insanely appealing in this hobby is never knowing what you are going to find until you cross that threshold, and the anticipation makes every place worth a look. It is always thrilling to see how great the variation of visuals can be from one abandoned place to the next. That contrast couldn't have been greater than this weekend, when, in the space of only 45 minutes, I went from this abandoned house bedroom....

There I was staring at the most decayed sleeping quarters I have seen in many years. This nicely secluded farm is an absolute jungle of greenery. It is getting overrun by nature, with vines wrapping up around the house and sporadic pieces of farm equipment getting swallowed from the ground up.

Thankfully, this northern property is well distanced from the tick-insanity of the Niagara region. Without exaggerating, walking through waist-high grass like this to a farmhouse in Niagara would leave you with 20-30 ticks to remove! Crazy Car Club recently found that out with a farmhouse stop in Port Colborne.

My son decided that this fan was the most depressing visual of the entire place. He said it looked like one of the characters in Disney's Beauty & The Beast that suddenly becomes sad.

Six vultures flew off or out of the roof of the house upon approach. They spent the entire visit circling around the property, daring to swoop closer and closer. I never did find the nest site, but it must be here somewhere. I'm guessing that it is up in the destroyed ceiling of the house. There's nothing left of it but a skeletal framework, and that has let in enough water and pine needles to give the bedroom a unique look of northern decay.

Unfortunately, the old trunk sitting in the middle of the bedroom was completely empty. I was very hopeful, as this place seems to have entirely escaped vandalism and is secluded enough to not even have a functional driveway any longer.

I'd like to return here in the autumn and winter, as there are several outbuildings waiting to be explored. They were so engulfed by growth that I couldn't even walk out to them. Hopefully there is more to be seen from this location.

I was kind of hoping to find a few fledgling vultures sitting up in the rafters and have to dodge vomit projectiles from the adults while taking photos of them, but the place was surprisingly quiet!

So beautiful, so sad and yet so hilarious. That totally is the most depressing fan I've ever seen, reminds me of Eeyore!

Stinky big ass birds... I had one take off from a nicely rotted road-deer and came so close to headbuttting it on the bike, the smell made me gag.

Crazily enough, there wasn't the slightest odor at all. It looks sopping wet and moldy, but it is an illusion. The 'mold' is all moss and the pine needles everywhere give it an impression of wet rot. But everything was bone dry. Even kneeling down to take that mushroom shot, I didn't even get a mark on my pants!

Nature is so cool...

Side note I totally thought that top photo was your bedroom, or your sons. Doesn't even look abandoned! ;)

You and me both! That bedroom had me re-questioning everything about the place that I was in. I actually got a bit panicky and wondered if I was just in a downtrodden house where a worker got up that morning and was out in the field. The wrinkles in the sheets just kill me! But there's a story behind this place and it was clearly vacant--but only for a few years. I'll think I'll do a full post on this location.

PS - My sons' bedrooms are shitholes. I wish their bedrooms looked like that!! (well.... maybe minus the tissue box right beside the pillow in that pic)

Well, the nice thing about abandonments north of Toronto is that they're usually filled with such decay. The drawback is that they're usually totally empty, but it's a balance. Truly rare is the house filled with possessions that also features this kind of decay, but they're around!

Looks like im late to the party I hope you won't mind another comment. The sheets on the bed in pic 1 are mesmerizing. Someone liked that color because they have a shirt in the bag the same color. Looks like they were packing to go somewhere and never got to finish. Strange, yet intriguing. The change from that to total ruination in the second view is Amazing! The white siding on the house looks so nice and white until you gaze over at the holes in the roof. Excellent shot. Always love your work and your eye for detail. The sink and the potty are disgustingly amusing Great set!

Well, to deepen that mystery even more, they left a note downstairs scrawled on cardboard. I'm going to work on that set as my next post. I'll drop you a line when I put it up. Intriguing indeed!
