I dunno if she was on her but figured I would post. Drowned after being swept away photographing storm drains in Philly.

That is just horrible. I hope it ended quickly. I see from the news story she is originally from your home state - I presume you knew her at some point and in some form. I am sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

What we do is DANGEROUS, and there is a reason why most locations are off limits. As with anything dangerous, you can never get to comfortable. Fear keeps us careful and safe. With comfort comes complacency, and that is when we make mistakes. Unfortunately some mistakes are fatal.

Stay safe - there is too much more of our world you have yet to explore.....

It should be a reality check for all of us. What we do is often dangerous even when the explore seems mundane. It's easy to get complacent while exploring. We really should take a few moments to consider our exploring style. Do we maintain a bit of a safety margin? Or are we always right on the edge? Adventurous is fine, reckless can kill you and your buddies as well.

Direct from her boyfriend who was there when it happened

"If you look at the other photo, that is the drain we were in. It had less then 6 inches of water. We’ve been here a few times already, and i used to ride my bike in this drain all the time when i was younger. I know friends who’s been in there a bunch recently and never had any issues.

We checked several websites about the weather and there was no rain coming till later that night.

We planned to be in there for an hour, then go to the roots picnic concert, then leave for upstate New York the next morning. We were always planning something new and spontaneous to do.

After about 40 minutes of shooting in the drain, we were literally taking our last few photos as we started hearing water rushing.

From what i was told the water was coming from flash floods 3 hours away in the poconos. It never even rained in Philly till hours later that night. Within 5 minutes it went from 6 inches of water to waist high.

We tried to find a manhole to climb out but another 2 minutes later It was up to our necks and we were floating through the drain in rapid rushing water. It was throwing us around everywhere and we kept screaming each others names back and forth saying were gonna be ok.

We lost grip and the current took her ahead of me. At the end of the drain theres a big metal gate. I kept yelling that we had to grab the gate if possible and not go under it.

Less then a minute later i was sucked under the metal gate with the water and hit my head on the concrete or the gate. I was then unconscious for im not sure how long. I woke up 25 yards up stream stuck between a tree branch choking up water.

I crawled to shore then tried to stand up and collapsed, I couldn’t move. I could just scream out her name but i got no response. The water stripped all my clothes off besides my teeshirt and boxers.

I was freezing and my feet were bleeding all over but i finally got up and continued to try and walk down the stream looking for her. The current took me under again and i almost didn’t make it out a second time.

I knew i had to get to land and call the police. Im so so sorry Becca. I tried everything i could. I didn’t want to go to the hospital, i wanted to continue to look for you all night

Very sad to hear about this after just exploring a drain myself. If you are unsure about the weather or even if there is a small chance it could rain that day: When it rains, NO DRAINS. Even the best of us take these risks sometimes. I guess we are just the lucky ones. A great photographer has passed. Rest in peace Rebecca

I saw the article about her death this morning. Very saddening, I like her perspectives and her style. I hope her bf seeks therapy and doesn't blame himself. Flash floods from rain 3 hours away? Jeez.

So here is a human-interest-story style write-up...

http://www.philly....ting-20180606.html

Altogether it is good, maybe a bit hagiographic. A little exotification of urbex... but that's unavoidable given the journalist/audience (i.e. general for both).

But in this age of amp-media (read: "media" that does no investigative legwork but mostly just summarizes the more sensational aspects of the original source), they are now running with the dubious "queen of urban explorers".

Thank You to the ones that posted this and shared what happened. This is so sad. I didnt know her personally but watched her U tube vids and enjoyed her work. It was one of the videos she made on a Texas prison that made me chuckle because her and her friends were walking a hot mile through the same cornfield i accessed in the summer heat when they could of drove through it if they had known the back way. She seemed like a very nice and caring person and its just a shame she was caught in that drain was taken by the force of nature. My heart goes out to her BF, family and friends. Lesson for everyone! Enjoy what we do, but always be safe!

If we were a community of mountaineers, spelunkers, whitewater paddlers, scuba divers... there would be losses among us just as surely as we have losses among urban explorers. These pursuits are fraught with many dangers and each death (we have had several) is a loss and a tragedy. Internet trolls are always quick to dismiss our losses as frivolous, unnecessary and stupid... which is easy to do from your sofa or air conditioned office.

The explorers of old 'discovered' uncharted wilderness. But we live in a world that has been charted, mapped and graphed ad nauseum. Like the mountaineers, spelunkers, paddlers and divers (we have members who do it all), we live in the modern world yet still possess that Wanderlust... the "Exploring Gene"... the curiosity and drive that has always pushed our species into uncalculated places and situations that the more timid among us dare not go. We don't do this because it's necessary or smart. We do this because it's a very human thing to do, and to live a life devoid of curiosity, risk, adventure and wonder is simply not the life we chose.

Rest in Peace Rebecca. Your death is a tragedy but I know - I think we all know - why you went into the sewer that day. No judgement here.

And as for the rest of us: please be safe out there. Remember that situations can change for the worse very quickly.

A tragedy, and a god damn waste.

And another sobering reminder of how quickly shit can go sideways...not only in this hobby, but life in general.
