Limestone stope and pillar mine; Miltown Indiana
I was looking for an abandoned train tunnel that should exist perpendicular to the pictured RR tracks in Depauw, IN. I could not find it, and my GPS coordinates put it on private land. I was not about to walk the flaking limestone ridge next to the tracks, nor walk through someone's backyard....
Leaving the location, I stumbled across the partially back filled portals to the mine. Nearby was Robertson Crushed Stone, so I would assume this mine was once operated by them. The ceilings were 30-50ft high, and I picture the huge mining trucks moving in and out of the dozens of portals. This location was HUGE - I could have spent all day exploring it, but I had other locations to get to in the 2 days left of my vacation. I only spent about 20min in there. It was wet and muddy with very heavy clay. Based on the garbage and extent of graffiti, I would say this mine was active only a few years ago...

8. Hunting an abandoned train tunnel was the original plan for this location. These are the aforementioned flaking limestone ridges I was not about to walk along. I am too old for those risks!

11. This was a large turnoff where I parked. I wish I had time to climb over that pile to explore. But being totally geeked out about the mine up the road, walking to the portal was my priority.
12. Cool limestone outcrop towering over my parking spot.
