Exploring a nearly abandoned mall

Yesterday I explored a nearly abandoned mall with another explorer (@brunclemilk). There were about 4 stores still in the mall but three of them were closed to the mall and only open to the outside. When we got inside we just started hanging right turns to make sure we explored the entire place. Many of the lights were burned out and all the security gates were down. I was taking pictures with my DSLR and about 5 minutes in the mall cop comes and tells me that it is against the rules to use cameras on the property because of some stupid law made in the 80s and he said if he saw me using it again he'd have to write a report to the police. But the weird part about the law was that it was limited to devices that the main purpose was to take pictures so the cameras on our phones were fine and didn't break the law. Later we ran into him again and he told us the mall was owned by a law firm in New York and they make most of their money from lawsuits. Heres some pictures from the trip:
Also the full resolution and the complete collection from the day is: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmjYQKa5

4. There was a game shop off the cafeteria, this was the only shop open inside the mall.

6. The mall cop also suggested checking out the parking garage before it got dark because there was some cool graffiti out there.

8. Cheap movies though! Too bad they closed years ago...

9. Guess his ride wasn't going anywhere soon...

10. My favorite picture from the place, just all the burned out lights made for a really eery effect.

Good to know they've found another revenue source.

Anyway, at least you met a decent-sounding security guard.

Thanks for the link to your photos! That is Much better then those small shots.
I find this such a shame. This is a gorgeous mall. If this could be transported to my area and exchanged for our mall, People would think they died and went to shopping heaven. Love the levels and colors. The top glassed in dome is really nice. You would think NY lawyers could think of something to do with this!

That's how it seems. But.... We have a large abandoned mall, Northridge, in the Milwaukee area (don't bother if you're local - no way to get in without breaking in, and you WILL get arrested). Yet two huge new malls just opened in the surrounding areas and some existing malls have been expanding. People still seem to go there around here. Northridge was shut down because the neighborhood changed, and they just couldn't keep the hood rats out that did nothing but loiter and spend no money. Stores closed up one by one, and then they shut the mall doors in 2003. A local news station did a report there in the last year or 2. The inside still looks in great shape, thanks to police, security, alarms, and cameras....

In regards to Amazon killing them in general, it is indeed a big part when it comes to the ones that have closed. I personally, do all my shopping online. Clothes, presents, car parts, even tires...

Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.
