Played My Get Out Of Jail Free Card

My last set was a small jail. This is a Prison. My first one was NO where near this size. So, i was excited and amazed to see what i saw. I didnt even get to see but maybe half of the sprawling facility. At one time this system was a working/farming prison. It is surrounded by cornfields and was used to produce food that was sent to food banks all over the state in addition to feeding the prisoners lots of corn and vegetables. Not totally a bad thing, until you had to work the fields all day and spend time in a very hot cellblock. Thats what finally closed this place. Despite the fact the place was old, it was poorly ventilated and some of the tower cells would reach over 120 degrees during the summer months. Men died here from heat-related issues. These are in no particular order. Just take a tour with me and i hope you enjoy what you see

Amazing pictures! It's on my list of sites to visit. Was this a recent trip? I had heard rumors that it was locked down. I've seen videos of this place but they have nothing on your pictures!

I keep telling myself I need to go here, and I keep not going. lol

Great pics. Thanks for sharing!

-Side note, my wife did a report for school a while back on the history of Texas prisons. This place has a dark history, it started and operated more as a slave camp than a prison. After reading some of the history about the place, I am glad to see it shut down!

There is a prison grave yard across the highway from it, next to a nice newish housing development. I have heard people talk on the radio about some of the leaders back in the day in this area that established it, and what great things they did for the community with the business that they built that gave the area its name. But I can't help but think of the price that was paid to make that area what it became. Sad sad history, but awesome photos. And I still want to go. lol

Thank You Very Much! Better hurry, the city is going to demo it soon. I was there 2 weeks ago. The gates are locked tight. But, if there is a will... there is a way.

Thanks! You are Welcome! The history is really interesting, and would love to know more about what your wife found out. I DID find out about the cemetery but didnt have the time to investigate this trip. There is so much more to see. I just hope i can make it back before its all gone. But, as summer approaches it would be killer in there.

I know, but really, not terribly bad considering how many years its been closed, and how many people have been here. I remember your nice shots too. Have you made another trip?

One of my faves! Thanks So Much! Well, Thats what they say...but, you never know how much longer it will be. But, according to the news, the property has been bought and slated for redevelopment soon...
