Don't get stabbed by the bums! Every time Ive been down there they always watch me and ask me what my business is there. Just bring a machete and you'll be good!

While i was there i did not see any homeless people (i did have a 5in blade on me just in case), but i saw a LOT of their stuff (sleeping bags, jackets, blankets, etc) And some F**kBoys messing with their stuff, me and my friend scared them off, i just dont see any reason to mess with their stuff, like they already dont have much, dont mess up what they do have.

Remember,in a survival situation, Homeless are friends.. not food.

Side note- seeing these ruins gives me the saddest nostalgia.

The homeless are friends not food.

Has anyone been in a situation where they had to pull a blade or a pistol?

Yeah, I stabbed a man in the heart. There were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident.

Ha, didn't even know there were ruins left. Why didn't the city 'finish the job'? Seems like these are more of an attractive nuisance than the actual building was.

By the way, the guy that originally bought this place and tried to turn it into artist lofts/condos before the city bailed on him, John Kerwin, is somewhat of a legend when it comes to saving (or trying to save) old buildings from cities trying to make everything look suburban-y.

He saved the lumber exchange downtown, then saved the fancy old brick building on Nicollet Island from being torn down, saved Purity Bakery in South Minneapolis, an old grain mill in Red Wing, etc. He would fight the city on zoning regulations and paved the way for the NorthEast arts revolution. Nicollet island would probably be one big city park without anyone living on it now if it wasn't for him.

I kinda like the idea of it being a park. Kill all the buildings and restore the natural plants and animals and such and then teach people about the native American significance of the place. Fucking white people came and destroyed a cool piece of native history. Fuck a private highschool, a restaurant, and a buncha houses.

That would have been cool, but my guess is that it would have instead ended up looking like Boom Island, which I consider a fail.

Yeah good point, or Harriet Island which is a buncha resource-wasting green grass. Or Trout Brook Nature Sanctuary, cut down all the trees and planted grass. Now there's no animals, go fucking figure!

I suppose it is kinda cool being the only inhabited island on the entire Mississippi of I'm not mistaken..
