Detroiter urban explorers?

Hi all,

As an occasional (but, I'm afraid, not very committed) urban explorer and PhD student in urban geography, I'm currently researching tourism interest for abandonment and urban ruins in Detroit and in Berlin. As part of my study, I would be very interested in hearing the perspectives of Detroiter urban explorers on the topic, as I believe you guys have a very special form of relationship to abandoned places, and as that form of tourism interest has been particularly intensely discussed in the city over the past years. It's probably useful to precise that I do NOT think that urban exploration is a form of tourism: I would like to hear how urban explorers feel about tourism in abandoned buildings, so I hope you won't get upset about me saying that urbex is tourism - this is not the case.

Anyway, your help would really be greatly appreciated. If you would agree to talk to me about it, be it per email, by phone, over a drink somewhere in Detroit or whatever, just drop me a message and we'll arrange something. I'm in Detroit until May 10th and would be grateful for your participation in this research!

Thanks in advance,

Aude

PS: sorry for the bad english, I'm French!

I'm not from Detroit, but I do remember this being discussed on here before. Here are a couple threads where people have shared their opinion on the topic:

I think it's safe to say that many people here see photo tours as a way to cash in on the trend that exploring has become. It also devalues what we do by pushing it more into the mainstream by making it accessible to soccer moms who would otherwise have no interest in going to abandoned places. By it's very nature, urban exploring cannot survive in the mainstream. It's popularity growth over the past few years has already made access to many places more difficult. Tours only stand to popularize the hobby more. It all just sounds very cringy to me.

I think it's also safe to say that most people here would not pay for a tours of places they already go to for free. Explorers generally like to go at their own pace, not have restrictions on photography, and be responsible for their own safety. Exceptions would be for places that are nearly impossible to access or if the tour provided in depth and interesting historical information on the place. Beyond what anyone can just find with a google search.

On the other hand, if the profits from the tours are being put towards restoration and saving a place from demolition, I have much less of a problem with them.

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Thanks a lot for your insights !

And no I'm no cop ;) Can send a paper I already wrote on the topic if that can help proving that I'm asking for research purpose only. Cops in Detroit probably have more important things to deal with than trying to track urban explorers down - or so I hope.

It's actually a valid concern imo. "Police Lt. Paul Tennies says the department “utilizes all resources available” to enforce compliance of trespassing — including seeking out social media posts associated with the property."

http://detroit.cbs...chiatric-hospital/

There are many more examples of that too.
