Sony A7 III / Lumix GH5

Hi all,

I've been thinking about getting a new camera to replace my 15 year old Nikon. About time, right? As with many of us, I shoot outdoor as well as in low-light location. I would also like to get serious about video.

I pretty much settled on a Lumix GH5 because of it's great video features and solid photos. For me, there are two big down sides to the GH5. The 4/3 sensor and the issue with auto focus. The 4/3 sensor has acceptable, but not outstanding low light performance. I'm also not a fan of the 2x crop factor, although that can be overcome to some extent with lens selection. Lastly, the auto focus issue. Not a problem for stills, but is quite an issue for video shooting.

So, a couple of days ago I saw that Sony released the A7 III. From what I can glean from the reviews, it is an amazing camera that overcomes the issues that I see in the GH5. I really like the idea of getting back to a full frame camera (I started photography with 35mm film). The big downside that I'm seeing right now is the cost of lenses. Ouch.

Both cameras have sealed bodies which is important to me since I shoot underground a lot. Although the GH5 has dropped a couple of hundred, both cameras are in the same price range.

So what am I missing? Have I overlooked anything obvious? I know that everyone has their favorite brand, but since this will most likely be my last camera, I want to get a really nice one that I can enjoy. I'm seriously leaning towards the Sony....

I would appreciate your thoughts.

I moved from primarily shooting full frame Canon (5Dii) to a little Sony a5100 a year or two back - even for being a "starter" mirrorless, I've been really impressed with my Sony so far, and I think I plan to stay there, for the time being. (I love my 5Dii, but it's just so damn BIG that it takes up almost THREE BEERS of space in my bag!)

It's time for me to upgrade, and I'm trying to figure out how to sell my wife on the a7 III, for sure.

Thanks for the reply! So many good cameras out there right now it's a bit daunting to commit to a manufacturer. I've looked at Sony as runner up to the GH5, but the a7iii changed my mind. Now just to get the courage to click the "buy" button for the pre-order.

Given all the photography folks here, I'm surprised that no one else has popped in with their opinion.

I am a sony shooter. I have the a7rii and the a9. I want to pick up the a7iii when it comes out for when I explore. Now that sigma is making native e mount glass. Its game one for me. I love my gmasters but they are 3 times the price of a sigma and not much difference in terms of quality.

I've got a A7 II but I will not be bringing it underground, bit too expensive to be throwing about in the dust (and the excessive wet and ochre we get here).
I would suggest one of the A5000/6000s as NotBatman mentioned.
Compact, lightweight, excellent quality.

Bought a A7 RII a year or so ago, incredible in low light. Your right though about it being a bit pricey to be carrying in to areas where it might get damaged. Have to admit I am a bit more careful than I used ot be with my older cameras!

For underground shooting I buy secondhand cameras off ebay. I tend to buy compact mirrorless cameras from Olympus since I like the color that they produce. Right now I'm shooting with a C5050. Only 5 megapixels but enough to post on a website or on a forum like this. I pick them up for around $100 bucks and don't really care when they finally die from the abuse.

My other camera is a Nikon D70S that I've had for a long time. It's so outdated that it really is difficult to get some of the photos I would like. I wanted to do some long exposure night photography and there are so many "hot" pixels that you can't get a decent photo. I may start using it underground to "up my game" a bit.

You can see why I'm ready to upgrade. I'll never be a photographer, but I do like to tell stories with pictures. To share my adventures. I think that the A7III is a good balance between cost and capability.

Thanks to all for the input! I'm really glad to get some input from you guys who shoot Sony rather than just watching U-Tube videos.

Personally if you’ve already got Nikon lenses, I’d get a newer Nikon IMO.

But I’m also saying that as someone with a D850, so I’m biased. You can get a D750 for $1500 or D810 for $1900 these days though.
