Huge Famous Ghost Town

I and Ptasteful_Pteranodon went to a huge and famous ghost town that was initially built for a mine and metal mill. At its peak, the town included over 300 homes for mine workers as well as an auditorium, baseball diamond, several schools, grocery store, link to the main railroad, and more. After the mine was shut down, the land and many of the buildings remained. There were potential plans to turn the site into a landfill. However, after many years of inaction, the plans were cancelled. Later, the top of the town was turned into a correctional facility that was open until a fatal brawl killed two inmates. A school also remains--supposedly still in operation for children of residents in surrounding areas. And the site is now planning to be converted into a hydroelectric plant.
I and Ptasteful_Pteranodon explored some homes, baseball diamond, the auditorium, one old school, and the mining area. We were shooting for the correctional facility as well but it was getting dark fast. It was an amazing location, and I'll be sad when/if it gets torn down.

NOTE: DO NOT PARK CLOSE BY. If you know where this location is, I would strongly advise not to park nearby since the site is now guarded and you WILL be talked to by security if you do. Also, people live on the property so you have to be very careful.
And if you know this location and have been thinking of visiting now would be the time to go.

This is awesome, my man. Pictures, write-up, warnings, whole deal. I’ve seen minimal pictures of the place, the structures in #8-10 are so enticing. Makes me want to get in the car and driiiiiive. Seems worth the 8 hour trek for me. Keep it up

Fantastic find, UECAL! I wonder if I'd be able to make it out there in the next couple weeks. A location that so large with such historical significance... damn!

Nice you made it! These are lovely shots too btw! I'm really drawn to the detail in one and the crisp colors in three.

Awesome photos! I love that place. Been there twice in the past 12 months, it's really unique compared to other ghost towns.

Sorry I'm late! UECAL mostly already described the trip so I won't go into much detail, but the site was sweet. There are some cars that patrol the outside of the property and at least one of the houses has someone living in it (some small dogs behind a fence started barking at us). If you can dodge getting caught, however, it's incredible.

This is so rad!

I tried years ago and got asked to leave by the caretaker (now deceased).

Then the second time I went I got through the gate only to be met by some dudes in a truck who said they were with an energy company surveying the land.

I'm really glad you shot this spot and also glad it hasn't been thrashed.

I'd be super interested to go with sometime.
