I'm sure Blackhawk will love this one:

I climbed on industrial scaffolding in an abandoned steam power plant that was rusted to the point that the majority had fallen down without anyone standing on it. I thought it was a good idea to put 125 lbs on it. To get to the roof I had to shimmy between the two rails that hold the steps in place. Most of them were rusted through on one side and many were completely gone. I was about 50-75 feet from the ground so a fall could have killed me. I did this twice and looking back I will never do anything that reckless again.

Oh and also one of the things I was shimmying up was held in place by a rope. I can't believe I did it once and said "Hey, you know what, I should do this again!"

Vids or it didn't happen:

Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is, are we living a life that is worth the harm?

Back in my early days of exploring, I was checking out a partially demolished section of a paper mill. I wanted to climb one of the taller sections, but the only entrance was a floor up, and only reachable by crossing a partially demolished section of the building.

Said section was missing two walls and multiple load bearing beams. I should not have walked across that section's rooftop, and yet I did, and it turned out okay. That being said, I made a lot of questionable decisions at that mill, and the consequences taught me to be a far more cautious explorer than I started out as.

This happened at this location. Basically a half-dozen medium-rise apartments, maybe 5 or 6 storeys tall, with multiple stairwells for each building.

An artist used to live here so she created an open house event and invited people to wander around, as well as offering various other activities. They found a couple abandoned bowling balls, so a bowling lane was set up on the roof of one apartment. There were no abandoned pins so they used water bottles instead, and the alley was marked by tape.

Weird, but not a bad or dumb decision.

Anyway, one of the two stairwells up to the roof of this building had been flooded and the water had frozen, so we had to take the other stairway up.

So I decided to take the iced stairway on my way down. The stairs were frozen perfectly over in a 45-degree waterfall, so the only way to do it was to slide down each landing at a time. Each time I did so, I smacked into the bottom wall with a loud noise.

What I saw of the flooding, how it had overflowed into apartments and frozen that way, was impressive.

Getting over this mattress was scary.

On my way down I discovered a group of artists were standing below me and starting to wonder what I was doing and if I was okay. I slid out at the bottom to applause. This is how the exit looked.

Wish I could find the video someone made of it.

This isn't exploring-related, but cycling along a highway with no shoulder. I had to bike on either the grass, the white line, or the rumble strips. The cars were going at about 40-50mph and did not give a fuck about our presence

Done a couple of silly things.

Exploring a network of underground tunnels in a torrential rainstorm, that was fun.

I've only ever done one explore in America alone and that was in a fairly sketchy part of Philadelphia, on an October evening, also in the rain. I did have a few moments of thinking to myself wtf am I doing I feel so out of place here.

Climbing the only crane I've ever done on a freezing cold January night with no gloves.

I'm sure there are others.

This:

We knew that place had active security, but I saw the big tape roll and did that anyway. We heard footsteps, so we very quietly undid the tape, and waited. We got out fine.

I helped a friend track down the owners and buy a long-abandoned mill in Clover, SC - one that remains a popular destination for folks on here. After the purchase, SanityAna (another member here) and I helped him start cleaning up the land and fence to keep him in good graces with the town. The one day I didn't wear any safety gear other than hearing protection my chainsaw hit a piece of fencing that had been enveloped by a branch. The chainsaw kicked back hitting my forehead, had it not been for the chain brake I'd have likely died.

2. The fence

3. The Mill

This would definitely qualify!

Okay, so as usual I can't really go into too much detail about this for a little while. But let me see if I can tiptoe around enough while still making this worth the read.

So we get to this place that many people have shot before. It's one of those "Holy shit, how can that be empty? It's incredible. We have to go" places. A good amount of people who posted it commented that they got permission when people were asking. We didn't have permission, but we were there. So we figured fuck it. Let's take a look around.

Walking around the place, we didn't see anything forced open. And the other thing about this place is that it seems wildly unlikely that the place would just be sitting there with no active alarm system. But wouldn't ya know it, we came around the corner and saw a way in. Not the type of way in you could just walk right in through, but nothing that required any sort of force or damage.

I was the only one in the group that thought the place didn't have an alarm. The one friend I was with was pretty sure it did, but they threw caution to the wind and went for it. I helped them get to the entrance and then my other friend and I walked over to a set of doors we were hoping would open from the inside. A brief moment later the door popped open, and we were in.

The doorway led to the basement, which was large and mazelike. It wasn't too long before we got upstairs though. Cautiously we crept out from the basement door and into a first floor corridor. It was stunning. My flashlight beam danced across the lavishly decorated building, eventually landing inside a former ballroom. The room was absolutely unbelievable.

I got to enjoy the sight for about a quarter second.

Sure enough my friends were correct, and the building did have an alarm system. An audible alarm system. A loud, audible alarm system. You know those corny alarms they have in movies? The ones that start saying things like "INTRUDER ALART!! INTRUDER ALERT!!" Apparently they actually exist, who'd have thought. We couldn't make out what was being said, half because of the echo as the sound thundered throughout the building, and half because we may have actually been running faster than the speed of sound. I'm not totally sure.

The person who went into the building first quickly led us back to the door we came through. We all scrambled out and shut it behind us. Still moving quickly, we worked our way toward the street. Little did we know we were actually bee-lining it right to the home of the property's custodian. Red faced and out of breath, and just seconds from the freedom of the public road, we were stopped by the person as they were leaving their home.

"Hey......" they said, in a tone more curious than accusatory.

"Hi! How are you doing today?" I quickly responded, doing my best to not sound like I was in a full sprint just a few moments prior.

"I'm fine, were you over near _______?"

"Oh no, we were just taking photos of ______ [tranquil landscape features], why?"

"Well you're on private property, the burglar alarms at _______ are going nuts. The police are on their way to scan the property. You better get out of here now"

We didn't need any further incentive. By the time we crossed the street we saw two police cars in and around the property. Then another. Then another. Casually we doubled back to the car and got in. I couldn't tell you why they never said anything to us, but I'll never forget that experience. It's a top 3 memory for sure, and I'd say it qualifies for this thread.

This is nowhere nearly as interesting as the other replies on this thread, but climbing out of a window 30 stories above ground in order to access a roof is the dumbest thing I've ever done but also one of the most rewarding. I got access to a cool elevator room and a nice antenna spire with a great view of downtown.

In my mind, I'd rather risk my life than risk getting caught for B&E so the window beats picking or bypassing a door any day.

I would pretty much agree, but after getting trapped in the infinite chasm of darkness and despair that is the criminal “justice” system, I almost have to think a little too hard about that one, lol.

Wearing all black to explore an abandoned circuit board factory in the middle of the night.

In winter.

We didn't think too much about it, but upon exiting the building and seeing three police cars parked across the road, it was a little tricky trying to be invisible walking across the snow covered and very well illuminated parking lot.

The dumbest thing: I got lockout on an abandoned hospital roof. I only realize when the door close by himself. And I got stuck here alone on a rainy day. Not a joke, it was a thunders storm. But I got lucky, there was a ladder that leads on the fire escape stairs, but still, I really got a chance not fall of this old ladder and stairs. And it was so slippery.

My friend and I had been scoping out this house we had seen many times from a hiking trail, but we had never been able to check it out because it looked like the trail to the house had grown over and it was all swamp and bog land and we probably could not cross. Even if we did attempt to cross it would take time and tools and the property was right next to a busy road and on top of that the care taker of the property lived across the street. Last year we got a really huge snow storm which normally would make exploring harder but in this case it froze over the bog land and we could easily cross it with snow boots. Normally when I am UE exploring I dress in dark colours as I don't want to be noticed or seen so this is exactly what we did and it wasn't til we got there until we realized how dumb were to dress in all black when adventuring through all white snow covered terrain. Luckily nobody saw us but we stuck out like sore thumbs.

There was that time I ended up in the middle of an active defense contractor site involved with production of B2 bombers. Didn't quite realize it until we noticed a fair number of military vehicles driving not far from us. Our retreat from the property was a lot more of a slow crawl through the underbrush than our entry had been.

Having not known our target was attached to a military contractor site, it was subsequent research that led to the B2 bomber discovery. There may also have been some connection to missile defense systems.

And I just wanted to take some pictures of rocket test facilities and nuclear reactors.
