Depends on the location. I usually never go alone, if something happens I want someone with me.
Usually it's just me and my exploring partner, but sometimes we'll bring a few others.
I don't think I'd want to have more than 4 people.

I've never went with more than 3 people for 2 reasons: that's the most people I've ever been able to get together, and I wouldn't be comfortable with too many more. Past a certain size, your group becomes a crowd, and that's far too loud, and noticeable. Coordinating 1-2 other people isn't so hard, but keeping a group of more than 5 in-line seems needlessly difficult, unless everyone is on a higher Experience Level.

Since I mostly do drains I go with as many people I can round up lol.
Some days I'm on my own, other days just with one other person, then we get days where lots of people are able to make it and you end up with 8 or so.
Sometimes we do events down drains as well like movie shows which attract a fair amount of people, I think the most we have had in one system was around 24.

So my "preferred" size is at least one other person, but the more the merrier.

I'm cool exploring just by myself but if it's at night I'd rather have a few friends with me. I got confronted by this crackhead couple inside this one bando in Hayward once. It was like 10 PM pitch black and if I wasn't with a friend at the time I could've easily gotten mugged or attacked and no one would've known. Always good to have backup with you

I prefer one other person, just in case I hurt myself.

I usually explore alone for several reasons. For one thing, I like to do a lot of light painting - particularly on more rural explores - which takes time and patience. Even if I'm exploring during the day, I would still be considered slow by most people's standards (I do it mostly for the pictures!), and I don't like feeling rushed or feeling like someone is having to wait on me.
That said, I have explored with one, two, three, or more - usually the person or persons that accompany me are in it for the same reasons I am (like the light painting for example), so it's not such a big deal to take our time. A partner makes light painting a million times easier than having to fumble around with technical and compositional shit while also manipulating the lighting around you.
The dynamics and overall experience feels dramatically different to me going solo vs going with a group, or even just one other person, but both options have been positive experiences for me overall. I'm usually more comfortable solo in rural settings and perhaps a little more comfortable with a partner or two in certain urban settings. Non-local urban settings are probably the times when I most want someone else with me.

It just depends.

Even then. It's been my personal experience that any group larger than five is ill advised if you need any amount of stealth at all. Five is doable if everyone is experienced, but six reaches the point where you start having to play a game of telephone to relay important information.

The ideal group in my experience is two to four people- small enough that stealth is still possible, while large enough to have a good group dynamic that can make exploring more fun if everyone's on the same page and handle any kind of emergency.

Indiana Jones wasn't an archaeologist, he was an urban explorer. Archaeologists do a lot less running and a lot more paperwork.
