The Place Volvos Go To Die

For my entire life I have been surrounded by old cars, but mainly old Volvos as my father was a mechanic who specialised in Volvos from the 1950s through to the 1970s - mainly Amazons and P1800s although he had everything from PV444s to early 240s. He gradually started changing his business over through the course of about a decade and finally solely focused on vintage Japanese motorbikes as decades of car mechanic work had ruined his back, and he stays in that business to this day.

This junkyard is legendary in Volvo circles, the family have had a yard here for 70+ years and have focused almost exclusively on Volvos for the last thirty or so. Sadly the yard will be cleared by the start of next year - when you're offered £4 million for the land you own you'd be silly not to take it!

I have gone past many many times and never stopped to look around, but one of my close exploring friends now owns a very nice 240 and he was in need of some bits so we went looking. It's mostly modern stuff in there nowadays but there are still a good number of old 2/3/7/9 series Volvos.

The owners are very accomodating and let us wander freely. It has a feel of one of the last true 'oldschool' junkyards in this country, they simply don't exist like this very much any more - too many regulations in place!

At one end of the yard is an inpenetrable wall of crushed cars stacked up - after clambering on top of some of them I counted it at over ten rows deep.

Thanks for looking

Saw one 240 there; the rest are Shitvo's
240's run forever and were built like tanks; great cars.
It's hard to find good bone yards with old ones

There were about half a dozen 240s there, a few were out front on the old forecourt as cars customers had dropped off to be repaired. They were one of the only production cars to be built alongside it's direct successor, the 740, all the way up to 1993.

I had two 240 wagons and a 240 sedan.
Best cars I ever had.

There's still a few 240s, 700s & 900s near me, with the odd 300.

A cross over model no doubt

It was absolutely rotten, having stood up to it's arches in weeds for god knows how long - those old Ford Transit vans rust like hell at the best of times, I was gently tapping the front arches and bits of it were falling off ha.

Although you're right, it'd probably still run!

Oh you're right, now that I took another look I can see the rust and on the fender flares where its basically chipped away. The Ford just looks to be like the most intact vehicle on that property. Is Ringway a phone service company?

Chances are it was an old telephone line or cable maintenance company, personally I've not heard of them so they may not be in business any more. Those cherry picker cranes were used almost exclusively by line maintenance contractors over here.
