Ever accidentally gone into a non-abandoned place?

I was driving through the more rural parts of Oregon, and I kept passing by houses and buildings that look abandoned and derelict, but then I noticed a parked car and signs of life. I also recently went to an aluminum plant that was supposed to be abandoned, but it had all the lights on and a lot of security, so I left (turned out it was only abandoned for a year to be in use again in the near future).
Has anyone here accidentally gone into a house or a place that you thought was supposed to be abandoned but turned out it wasn't? And what are some signs that you look for to determine if a spot is really abandoned?

Ive said this before but infiltrating active locations is a must, at least once in every explorer's career.

At an abandoned paint factory in Pheonixville many years ago a real estate agent giving her client a tour stumbled upon us.
She seemed sort of scared; she thought we were squatters
And out the track side door we went...

True, it would be fun to go to an active location sometime- I assume a lot more social engineering is involved!

Haha wow!

Woah! I would not want to be in a situation like that! :o At least they didn't press charges.

A former member once told me he got into a foreclosed home in California, only to find it wasn't foreclosed and he could hear snoring in the other room.

Had my first active explore last week, didn't realize it was one until I was already in it. Was visiting a cousin in another state, and he was showing me around the campus of the university he attends. While going through one of the buildings (which was large, but a ghost town with a lot of locked doors), he turned and said "By the way, I'm pretty sure we're not supposed to be here." After a minute of "will this trip an alarm?", We ended up using the emergency exit stairwell to climb the building's tower for some elevated shots.

Pretty fun. At one point We were poking around in a side room and heard the elevator open outside, so that was a minute or two of playing Anne Frank.

I've definitely come up on squats by mistake, but I always call out to warn people before before I go in somewhere I think might be a squat because I'm not trying to walk in on people where they live, so I've never surprised anyone.

Did sneak into a business I (and google) thought was abandoned only to see it fully operational the next time I drove by in the daytime, but I went in through an unlocked window and didn't disturb anything so nothing ever came of it.

Done a couple of active places but not by accident.

Also done a couple of active/occupied places by accident.

Ironically this active place I did at the start of 2014 was abandoned and demolished a couple of years later - this was a crash test facility where they tested street furniture, lampposts, traffic lights etc against impacts from cars.

Once, whilst trying to find a way into an abandoned aerospace testing facility which bordered an active automotive test facility we took a wrong turn and ended up on their very active test track, once we realised the cock-up we got the hell outta there ha.

Yes that's right I'm an actual real-life British person.

actually I didn't "accidentally" explore an active location, I did some on purpose though and yes some disguisement was required

sometimes a disguise can just be as simple as sport coat and tie, look like a landlord or building inspector

my only accidental encounter such as you asked resulted in me leaving immediately when I realized there were people inside and I had not been seen yet

A while back I was checking out this old hotel that had been closed for a while. Back door was open so I went in. I was taking some pictures of stuff downstairs in the lobby, when I heard boards shift above and a radio turn on. I took a couple more shots and tip toed my 270# butt out.

Looking through my pics I saw that there were several cameras in the lobby.

I drove by the other day and there has been a new sign added to the front door that was not there before, one of those "Smile you're on camera".

Further research tells me that though the hotel has been closed for a while the owner still lives upstairs.

Still stalking the place, cause it is beautiful.

I tend to go for active areas more than abandonments tbh. As far as telling if a place is abandoned or not, google is your friend--you can usually find online if a place is still running or if it's been empty for a while, at least for less rural areas.
