In my own photos, I hate when I can't recover blown highlights no matter how much I dick with it in post, and also when I cut off elements with the edge if the frame. I'm super anal about composition in general.

Not gonna mention stuff other people do, 'cause glass houses and all.

EDIT: And also 90% of my half-assed attempts at distortion correction.

Personally, I underexpose about .7 of a stop on most photos for my D7200. Keeps the highlights decent, as my camera likes to blow them out.

If you use Photoshop with Adobe Camera RAW, there's a lens correction menu in RAW. Using (for example) a Nikon camera with a Nikon lens, it's literally 2 clicks to correct distortion. Otherwise you just have to select camera and lens, and it'll crunch the numbers usually. If all else fails, you have sliders to do it manually.

BTW OP, that angled photo stuff is called the Polish Angle. (as in Poland, not car polish)

The two biggest irritations for me are people not focusing right (or not correcting a front/back focusing lens) and crappy framing.

Framing I can get around, but focus being off, especially on people just drives me up a wall. I've literally returned and/or sold lenses that had front/back focus issues because of the fact it makes (in my case) portraits a touch off.

Primes are easy to fix in camera with the built in software by creating a correction profile. Zooms are a bastard because it'll only correct one focal length, so you have to pick what your favorite is and correct there. Why they don't have an adaptive setting, fuck if I know.

I'm just happy that Photoshop is awesome. Can fix distortion, perspective issues, even remove powerlines without screwing up the photo if needed.

It can be done well, it's possible. But it's often overdone by people who are just learning photography and it's sort of terrible.

A lot of these are so very relatable. Since I do night photography I get really upset when I realize I didn't get my subject in focus completely and it's a hazy blur. Also when I notice something in the photo I should have moved or I didn't intend on being there, just simple oversight.

The last time I posted about a photo pet peeve someone with far too much time on his hands went back almost three years into my instagram feed just to find pics of me doing the two things that I now consider a pet peeve that I tried three years ago!!!! I post one pic every day, so imagine how long it took him to do that....

I admit with no shame that I used to hate your photography. I won't sit and tear it apart because that's a dick move, but I will say you've improved so much and your work is really really good now. I think you're one of the only photographers I've paid enough attention to to see the drastic, phenomenal improvements over time.

Great thread! Personal pet peeve... Never being able to take a straight shot. No matter how hard I try. Always have to correct for some sort of crookedness later. ALWAYS.

Urbed photos with some weird optical effect added that makes is a blurry pixelated mess, especially when in a series of decently taken photos, none of which have the same objects in view.

Isn't it called the dutch angle? Its fun to look at on the occasion, but when a set has nothing but a 15 or so degree tilt, it gets aggravating.

....

I've always heard this called a "dutch angle," but I'm guessing the two phrases are more or less synonymous.

I'm really surprised I haven't seen the dreaded "HDR-in-overdrive" pet peeve mentioned yet, lol.

Someone else mentioned the ORBS... don't get me started!

Personally, I'm most upset with the focusing issues, and what I missed (or didn't miss) at the time. No amount of post editing can redeem a photo suffering from one of these issues. As long as it's my own photo, I can correct many of the issues already mentioned in post-edit, but not these last two.

I love looking back at my HDR phase and how absolutely terribly offensive it was and wonder what the hell I was thinking. Also, this reminds me of how much I can't wait to look back in 5 years at whatever my current phase is and what my thoughts will be then on what I do now.

I love that chart!

Yes, every time I start browsing my old stuff on Flickr and the like, I'm shocked (ok, let's be honest - slightly horrified) at what I actually did to my photos and then actually made them public. I'm always compelled to remove those damn photos, but I never do. This is for a couple reasons, but mostly because they are part of a linear progression. My personal journey. I need to see the improvement, the good, and also the bad.
Not to mention, memories that can be conjured up this way are priceless.

Another one. Selective color is the worst thing ever created. Next to her. Why does there need to be a red 🌹 in a B&w picture!??! Why!!!??!!

The big 3:

#1 The great killer of many a would be keeper... not squaring off the shot.
Probably the most common mistake I see here, followed by bad framing/composure.

&

#2 Images that were so much a throw away that the shutter release should have never been touched.
I know it can be hard to kill your children, but these were stillborn.
They're already dead.
Bury the poor bastards deep.

&

#3 Street shooting were the subject is obviously frowning because they didn't want to be shot.
Instant throw away if you didn't already see that coming.
It means the shooter isn't connecting with their subjects, or is trying to blindside them or sucker shoot them.
No class or clue.

Even if they're obviously smiling for the cam it is much better than an obvious frown from an unwanted shot.
A smile means they accept you and being shot.
Later you may shoot them without formal smile thing.
A frown means you struck out; it means you should have never hit the shutter release.
Plenty of fish in the sea if you don't poison the ocean...

Add to that most times I want to see their eyes and that the eyes are the focus point; that means they can see you.
People can instinctively feel when eyes are upon them, in that first moment of contact you can win their acceptance or scorn by what you do.
A feather in your cap, or a lick on you.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.
