Mr. asdafaf (AKA Max Action), the creator/author of Action Squad, was one of my greatest inspirations for the lengths I went to in pursuit of urban exploration (along with Ninj's infiltration.org). Without finding his website (actionsquad.org) at the beginning of the millennium, I might not have had the confidence to explore much beyond light active sites and abandoned farmhouses in Iowa.

The adventure stories written by asdafaf on his website really spoke to me at the dawning of my 20's. I tried to amp up my exploring game because of it. When I moved to Chicago in 2003, I sought out other urban explorers and eventually became connected with the local exploring community which existed there.

In 2009, asdafaf was looking for a roommate and I jumped at the opportunity to move to Minneapolis and get to better know the people who inspired my love for this amazing hobby. As a roommate, he taught me the fundamentals of longboard skating, which has now become my favorite hobby (probably more than urbex). He remained my roommate and landlord for several years, until he got married and moved out to Wisconsin to become an organic farmer with his wife. After years of renting out his house (the original home base of Action Squad), asdafaf is now in the process of selling off the property so he can focus all his time on the farm and the tribe of friends and family with which he's surrounded himself.

He's an amazing and unique individual, full of intelligence, personality, and charm. But he prefers to shy away from the attention which the Action Squad website brought him. He no longer participates in the online urban exploration scene, nor even the Minneapolis urban exploration community. But he still goes out exploring with his wife and whatever friends might happen to be with him on a given day. They check out rural abandoned sites now, more often than urban locations. But they did recently make a pilgrimage back to explore "Mel's Hole", an urban tunnel system he named after an old exploring friend. It just goes to prove that old explorers don't die, they just evolve into new and stranger (and more interesting) things. May we all be so lucky.
