This afternoon I was on my way to check out another spot when I passed an old cemetery with what looked to be an abandoned chapel on the grounds.

I pulled over and discovered a way inside, at first I was underwhelmed, until I lifted a board of wood off the floor and discovered what looked to be an opening for a casket to be raised and lowered from the basement for a funeral service.

In the basement there was a ramp that led out to the cemetery, I have never seen anything like this and I was intrigued by these unique features. Now, I am fully assuming that the opening was for raising and lowering a casket and that the casket would then be wheeled up the ramp to the cemetery for burial...in my mind it all makes sense!

Man I don't get how you explore abandoned stuff on your own! I love going on solo expeditions, but abandoned stuff just gives me the creeps. Super cool find though, amazing as always!

Thanks, I've never had a problem...I imagine if/when I encounter something while alone it may change my attitude but I feel like the heightened state of alert and the rush that I get overpowers any strong sense of fear...or whatever. I'm actually mostly afraid of being sprayed by a skunk or have a face-off with a porcupine.

A follower on my Facebook page said this was probably a mortuary used to store the dead over the winter and then all of the bodies would be buried on the same day once the ground was thawed.

Porcupines are not aggressive. They got really big ones in Texas. They are fun to watch.
Shunks are docile and tolerant but if they do spray you especially in the eyes it's a real problem.
I've walked up on them at night no less than 3 times... I don't like doing that!

I've seen more skunks than I care to think about, but surprisingly, I've never seen a Porcupine - even in Texas!

The more I look at this thread, the more interesting of a find I think you have here. This probably doesn't exist this far south (not cold enough to necessitate the use of "dead houses"). I'm a sucker for the cool and historically valuable finds. Another great post, thanks for sharing!
