Caught For The First Time (Freaked Out)

Before I start this, I should add that I've actually been caught by a guard on two other occasions, but got off on a warning. This is the first time I've gotten into actual legal trouble doing this. So here we go.

Today I was walking around some church. I don't want to be too specific as I don't want to actually include the location. I wasn't originally planning on doing anything except just look around the outside, until I saw a scaffolding on the side that led to the roof. I walked around to church to make sure no one was around (it was around 8:30 PM so it was pretty dark anyway), and then I decided to start climbing the ladder. I climbed up, took a few really crappy photos on my phone, and then just wanted to get the hell down from there.

As I'm climbing down, I see a guy walking with a flashlight around the side of the church. I tried to get down, but he saw me and started yelling at me to get the hell down from there and asking me what I was doing. I didn't want to run away, because I seriously doubt I would have gotten away, so I apologized to him and told him I just wanted to take pictures. He was really pissed and called the police telling me he was going to press charges.

The police got there, took my ID and whatnot, and asked some questions. They were a lot more kind than the security guard, I'll tell you that. I tried to be as respectful as possible since I didn't want to cause them any trouble. I even allowed them to search my car. The cop told me that I was just going to be charged with a summary offense, which is the most minor type of offense. Like it's lower than a misdemeanor. So I guess I'm lucky that I wasn't charged too heavily. He said that I would either get mailed one fine, or two fines, depending on what they decide.

I'm still kind of freaked out about this whole thing since it has happened. Will the summary offense have any effect on my future, or is it not that bad? I'm 18 years old by the way, and I can get the offense expunged in five years if I don't get into anymore trouble. This whole situation has really made me think about whether I should just quit urban exploring or not. I don't want to risk ruining my future with criminal charges if I end up getting caught doing something like this again. I just really had to write out my thoughts somewhere, since I haven't told anyone about this yet. Thanks for reading.

You forgot the golden rule...
Always run from guards; never run from cops.
I would have slid down that ladder and ran like a bat out of hell... especially at 18.
The #1 reason you got jammed up was the building wasn't abandoned.

If it wasn't fenced in you may be able to beat the charge; examine PA's trespassing laws. Talk to an attorney although retaining one may be over kill for nothing.
If it's a municipal trespassing citation it may never show up on your criminal history.
Hard to say, I know mine don't... maybe someone did me a favor

The only reason I didn't run was because my car was still on the property since I didn't originally plan on doing anything like that. So by the time I made it to my car, he probably would have seen which car I had making it more likely for me to get caught. Plus there were gates at the parking lot that I was parked in so I didn't want to risk the gates shutting when I got to the car. There was so much running through my mind and I just didn't want to run if I was probably going to get caught anyway.

You shouldn't do things to attract the attention of the law.
For example our local police love the smell of a BBQ.

I always worry about getting caught but this site has calmed my worries a bit. I think most of the places I have gone to are easily accessible. Typically I judge the place by how easy I could get in. If I would have to break anything or do anything that is questionable I do not go for it. I've been at UE for about a month now and I have not been caught. Maybe I am just lucky though.

You should never be breaking anything to get into a location, you might have to do some climbing or be...creative. Believe it or not, from what I experienced as long as you are carful and think you won't get caught. I have never ran into police or guards yet and I'm thankful

So far I've had only one experience with a guard. Luckily, I was not actually doing anything (yet). I pulled up and saw two cars sitting on the side of the road and I saw the security vehicle. I was not going to run away because its like "shit, he already saw me, might as well say something". I just pulled up and asked if it was closed (obviously) and he said yeah. I apologized explaining that I did not see any signs, which was true from the way I came in, and then I turned around.
It's really nothing compared to what has happened with others.

At least you pulled off acting innocent pretty well, and got out of there easily. Some people have horror stories about getting caught, fun to read but sounds horrifying to experience

You never known. Remoteness is no guarantee either; I got boxed in by a dozen cops at a remote Nikki site. They set a perimeter complete with command post and were fixing to go in with k9s, oh my.
Took down with a #12 pump... thankfully as pissed as they were they were professional and didn't rough me up a bit.

Lessons learned;
●don't be observed going in by anyone.
A 13 yo cunt mistook my tripod for a rifle from 20 feet or less away. Seal my fate, bitch.
●People are trouble, proof.
If you're caught by cops never resist.
Be as calm and complaint as possible; they respect this. Obey all commands without hesitation and be chilly.
They impounded and searched my car with a warrant.

After they calmed down they were actually very nice. They had me hand cuffed to a bench for about 2 hours; I waited without squirming or asking for anything. Eventually I talked at length with the Lt, and over half an hour with the police chief a few days later.
He was a good guy, returned all my gear undamaged; I gave them permission to view all the images.
Even though I could have, I took no images of cops or houses, only my target site. That saved me.
He spoke with the assistant DA and my charges were reduced from two felony counts to two municipal misdemeanor charges with no lawyer.
All in all it cost me about $1200 and a lot of lost sleep, cheap.
And I got full permission to go back to the Nikki site; the Chief had the gate key and the county had control of it. I was stealing when it could have been mine simply by asking, fuck me silly.

●Keep tripods out of sight.
●Avoid being spotted by anyone if at all possible. This is important. If spotted a cam in your hand usually helps your cause; I was invited into a train switch house once by the switch master when he saw me trespassing on the tracks and shooting the switch tower.
●It pays to be friendly most times...
●Many times an LEO will work with you.
●Cops hate to fuck over a good guy, be nice.
●If it's a guard, run!
●Never run from a cop unless you're dead certain you can get away, and gambling like this can get very expensive. Not advisable to do.
●Never capture a image if it seems like a bad idea; this has saved me twice with cops. Remember your images are evidence to convict you... or prove your innocence. They show intent, graphically!

I've explored hundreds of locations over the past 10+ years and have never once broken anything to get inside. If it's not accessible, move along and try another day.

I took it as getting caught one day, from what Blackhawk said. Not breaking and entering

Maybe I'm wrong

I'm with you on that; it pays to be patient.
Would you never climb a fence or scale a gate?
Picking locks and breaking anything to get in is something I never recommend or do.

Shit can go wrong an infinite number of ways, some that are beyond your control.
I explored for over 35 years without being arrested.
Some however don't even make the year mark.
The best sites I've done were by permission except for Beth, that was one of a kind.
