Need opinions on two photos.

The first one is pretty straight-forward. After finishing up in the RAW editor, I accidentally hit the button to re-apply everything I'd done, causing all the settings to stack. In particular, I liked the way the Clarity slider had stacked, so I went back to the beginning and did it manually. I'm pretty happy with the result, but worried it might look overprocessed.

You might have to click the second one and see it full-sized on flickr. I'm not really too happy with how it came out, but I'm not entirely sure what's wrong with it, either. To me it looks kind of soft at points, though it looks ok in the original image, so I'm not sure if it's a result of downscaling, or my editing. I also feel like the shadows are too dark, but I want to hear from others if that's the case.

Criticism would be very much appreciated. I still have the RAW files, so there's plenty of room to mess around, though I'd have to re-remove some graffiti on the second.

I like #1 a lot

#2 is way too dark; tone curve... sorry that's as complicated as I get with image processing.

Thanks for the input. Is this better? I might have gone too far in the other direction.

DOARope...Love the first shot. The second one looks a lot better lightened up. There is a certain mystery about dark hallways and may be the look you was after... and dark is great if it has enough lighted areas to make it interesting like your second one. Now, if you REALLY wanted to show the hallway you could even go this far....(took a stab at it) You may hate it... I don't exactly hate it, but it shows that your second try wasn't going to far in the opposite direction and really was the best look overall.

I used to be in love with the HDR but I hate it now.
If forced, it makes my eyes bleed.
I have come to the conclusion that the dark parts of a photo are much better... DARK.
The shadows are beautiful too

There are limits to what a cam can capture...
Lol, and HDRs ain't the answer
Sometimes straight up black is better

In my opinion I would stay away from HDR. It makes everything look fake. You don't always want to see EVERYTHING in the photo. Bring out the highlights and shadows. Make it look realistic.

If anyone really read my post thats what i was trying to show....His second try is just about right to make it dark enough, yet mysterious and interesting at the same time. Too Much light ( Like my example) leaves it looking too overdone. Like i said, i don't hate it, but its not as realistic as DOAR's medium range pic.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I try to let natural light do it's thing as much as possible and allow for some dark spookiness, but sometimes I forget my monitor turns night into day and what I see isn't necessarily what others will see.

@MisUnderstood, it's so weird and cool seeing one of my pics in your style! I've been meaning to ask for some time, what exactly do you do to get that almost cell-shaded look?

Hahaha! DOARope... You are not suppose to like it! It was just an example of going TOO LIGHT with your photo. Im not sure what you meant by cell-shaded!? I looked it up and it seems its a technique done in Comics and Video games...Is that what you meant?

Actually, I do like the extra light in the B&W version. And cell-shaded probably wasn't the right way to describe it. I was talking about that extra-sharp glowy look, it was more apparent in your colored version.

Oh WOW~ That blew my mind....I was like..How did photo bucket replace the colored version with the black and white version. This is crazy! I DID play with the pic last night and thought....i wonder what it would look like in B&W and I'm in agreement with you, I also, like the BW version better. Still wondering how that happened......!?!?! But, this is still the pic in question below

The glow and sharpness is from playing with the Brightness and Contrast regulator.
