Under a Swimming Pool

I was trawling through my older photos on Flickr and remembered this little slice of unusualness I managed to see way back in December 2011.

I can't remember the circumstances that led up to this but somehow I found myself in the service tunnels underneath an active indoor swimming pool which was open at the time. The tunnels used to form protection for local residents from bombs during WWII as well.

Definitely one of the most unique places I've found myself photographing. I do remember it was like a sauna in the tunnels which made a nice break from the cold December air outside!

Those wartime warning notices are insanely cool! Really highlights the original purpose of these tunnels.

This reminds me of the basement of my old middle school. I was on tech crew for the school play, and made the set pieces down there because there was plenty of room. Naturally, I wandered off to explore plenty of times.

The school had an indoor pool, and the basement served as a fallout shelter during the Cold War. It looked a lot like a dingier and darker version of what you posted.

Too bad this was long before I got into urbex. What I wouldn't give for some photos... too bad a random adult wandering around inside a middle school would raise some eyebrows.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

I can almost feel the heat and humidity! The war time signage is very cool.

"Don't leave litter about" so quintessentially British!

I never like being under bodies of water, even when taking the subway under the river. Interesting place.
