Friday afternoon Mrs. Ulcer sent me an email with a google map entitled "The Ultimate Texas Road Trip" and said, "Get ready, I'm leaving early and we're going!". Shocked at her spontaneity I immediately began packing the roadster and finished just as she arrived. By 2:30 we were touring Natural Bridge Caverns! Somehow or other, I managed to survive the 20 story hike out of the place intact and make it to dinner in Gruene at a place called The Grist Mill. I highly recommend it if you're in the area!

The next day we awoke sore as hell and still a bit shagged from the previous day but it didn't matter - we had cool shit to see! The first stop was a place called Jacobs Well. A bit of a bummer in my opinion but then again we didn't get the chance to swim down it!

The next stop was a place called Hamilton Pool. This place was stunning! I had absolutely no idea something like this existed in Texas!

As we were driving down the back roads headed back to the hotel, Mrs. Ulcer shouts, "What was that!?! Turn around!" I hadn't seen anything all that special, but as usual she was right. A pretty cool little dam.

Overall a great weekend made even better by the fact that I got to knock off one of my UEBEX Bucket List items the next morning but more on that later. Hope you enjoyed the photos! More photos and better quality here:

The Blanco runs outside of Wimberley. You can still see the devastation from the Memorial Day flood. Late at night, the river rose up to 45 feet and barreled down at 100 mph. Homes and hundred year old Cypress trees gone in instant. My family thankfully lives uphill, so we didn't get hit.

If you come back to this area you should follow the roads around the Blanco and see how Mother nature can repair itself. But there are patches still where people haven't cleaned up their land, so there are twisted pieces of mobile homes etc. You can still see some of the ruined homes that people decided to not rebuild as well.

Those pictures of Hamilton Pool are great! This is a great time of year to go as during the summer it's ridiculously crowded. Same for Jacobs Well.

Her spontaneity is giving me some inspiration to do some planning and send me wife the very same type of message just before one of the next few weekends.

We stayed in Wimberley at a rental house over the summer for a few days - its absolutely beautiful in the area but never made it into town. This last weekend we decided to stop and it's a great little place! I would highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area.

Hamilton Pool was incredible! I had no idea something like that existed in Texas! Even though it was the "off season" it was still a 20 minute wait to get in - I can only imagine what its like during the summer! That whole area is really nice and driving the back roads was a lot of fun. If anyone else is interested in taking the same trip here's the website:

I would HIGHLY recommend doing the caverns on its own. The drive itself is about 4.5 hours and that's without stopping. The caverns is a "must do" but its pretty hot and wet and after a long day of driving probably something you should put off for its own adventure. There's also a few places close by worth seeing as far as Urbex goes, but I'll let you discover those on your own!

You hit some of my favorite spots in Texas. I lived off and on in Austin for 10 years. I still go to Blue Hole at least twice a year. I am 40 and will do flips of that rope swing until my wife says I have to go. Here are a few flicks of mine from those areas.

Great shots, Peptic!
I'm really glad to hear that your wife was wanting to initiate your latest journey. There's something especially fulfilling about engaging in our passions, hobbies, and likes with a loved one.
Sadly, I have yet to make it to any of these locations. I really need to add them to my list. I only heard about them about a year ago as well!

Thanks.

There are MANY places like these in Texas. The thing is, they are mostly on private land. Honestly, I think it is for the better because a lot of these places get trashed, or cost a lot to keep clean. Nowadays you have to make reservation at Jacob's Well and Hamilton Pool because too many people want to go. That kind of traffic only causes problems.

I know of two amazing waterfall/grottos as good or better than Hamilton Pool, but like I said they are on private land. I don't even want to mention the holy grail of locations in the hill country because people have been abusing it. Good thing it is a 7 mile hike one way through rattlesnake country to get to it (unless you trespass).

However, other locations that are amazing and open to the public are:

Blue Hole
Pedernales Falls and river
Rio Frio
The Devil's River
Krause Springs (gets really crowded in the summer)
Sculpture Falls

And many more.

You just reminded me I really need to get out more (abandonments not included - I get plenty of those, but I really need to broaden my horizons!).

I spend way too much time shooting train graffiti and graffiti in general. I have nearly 10,000 edited photos on that subject. This past weekend I decided that I need to start shooting other things more and graffiti less. Going to make an effort to shoot more street photography, landscapes and abandoned stuff. Also decided to start shooting more film. Just sent off two rolls to be developed.

I am so glad you enjoyed your rental place in Wimberley! It's a gorgeous area and it's been fascinating to see how the earth can repair itself from a natural disaster..

This photo was taken of the Blanco about a month after the floods.
