They seem to have done a good job of exposing the truly blighted state of Detroit and its suburbs, but at the same time they seem to be rather big and public, especially for an urbex group.
I honestly kinda like them because of the comprehensiveness, however it does tick me off a bit that they don't conceal locations and therefore open stuff up for vandalism/arson/to.

I've read about and studied the situation in Detroit for quite some time and its a fascinating study in economics, politics and sociology. The city is in deep shit and has been for quite a while.

In the 70's and 80's imports from cars and cheap Japanese steel really hit the auto industry hard. Then NAFTA came along and the "Giant Sucking Sound" that Ross Perot (as batshit crazy as he was...) predicted came to fruition.

As the city lost jobs, people left to find work elsewhere (at least those that could afford to do so). Social services were overwhelmed and with a dwindling tax base and increased demand for those services taxes were raised, just exacerbating the economic situation as more business now had an incentive to relocate. Things were/are in a death spiral. Now you have the problem of the pensions.

The people that are still there are either fairly well off or dirt poor. The middle class is dwindling rapidly.

As a result of people leaving schools, fire and police stations had to be closed so service and response times have skyrocketed and are stretched to the limit. Now you have a blighted city full of abandonments that are getting scrapped for whatever monetary value people can steal out of them.

What Detroit Urbex does is the least of this city's problems. Having a location tagged, scrapped, or burned down isn't the result of something they may publish. In all honesty, they are probably going to get that way anyway. Highlighting abandoned buildings, historic or not, is not something the city is going to put on the top of it's list. They are overwhelmed by legal proceedings to condemn and demolish the thousands of houses that litter entire city blocks.

I keep hearing that the city is "coming back" but for every one of those stories I read, I see 10 more about all the problems. In the meantime, its a great opportunity for people like us to enjoy what we enjoy the most!

Weak, casual Google level information. Nailhed.com is vastly superior as a resource for all things Michigan.

Things in Detroit tend to get wrecked quickly enough without any help from any outside internet sources...

From what Im hearing here, reminds me of On the Roofs. Those guys hit some pretty fantastic locations, but are never the first. However, they are frequently the last.

Now that's the kind of site I always wanted to see about Detroit. It's so thorough in terms of abandonments. It's also well researched and has a lot of great information about the history of the buildings. There's also a lot of cool stuff around Michigan in general. I've spent more than an hour on the website so far, reading the articles and clicking on the photos. It makes me want to go back to Detroit for some more exploration!

Do we have any Detroit locals in routine company here? I'd definitely be interested in hearing the opinion of someone who isn't a tourist in this town, both on the group in question and the state of things out there.

My partner's family is there and we spend holidays with them, and are hoping to go out this summer to help out with their uncle's urban farms. For as much as the economic difficulties (and all that flows from them) are apparent and serious in Detroit (and I'm not saying this to downplay that in any way), there also seems to be a lot of really interesting communities out there, and a burgeoning art scene that, in my admittedly limited exposure, has seemed a lot less exclusive/pretentious than many I've brushed in the florid 'artistic' cities on the west coast (where I DID live for a time). I've enjoyed visiting so much in the last few years that there's a half-cooked idea simmering away in the back of my mind in which I relocate (urbex not included--I haven't really done any in that area).

This was a frequent critique of my American Urbex website, though my focus wasn't limited to Detroit. While I was fairly new when I started the site over time I came to learn that the level of disclosure that people are comfortable with varies quite a bit on the spectrum. I even received a fair deal of negative criticism from fellow members of this site. (Yes MSP, I acknowledge you. ) Then again, I also received a lot of positivity and support.

The thing to remember is not everyone shares the same common values or norms regarding urbex. DetroitUrbex is free to explore on their own terms and share as they see fit. You can disagree with what they do, but at the end of the day are you the arbiter who gets to decide for them if they can do it?

A valid point and your feelings are justified. But one could also argue that those locations are already open to vandalism/arson/etcetera even without internet exposure.

If any of the member(s) of DetroitUrbex are on this forum, and I suspect they might be, it may be worth engaging them in a dialogue. That's just me though.

Pretty much spot on. The spots he posts are places that are well past their prime. Information is decent, at best.

Nailhed.com is vastly superior as a resource for all things Michigan.

I wouldn't support someone who used to pride himself on blowing things up with M80s at abandoned buildings and now tries to pretend it never happened.

The first time I layed eyes on DetroitUrbex I was amazed.

First let me back up, I heard on a morning show on the radio, they were talking about the then and now pictures of the Cass Technical School. Of course I wanted to know more, so I searched until I found the site. I remember spending that whole Christmas day pouring through the website and just hooked on the decay.

I was still relatively new to photography, and was curious of the gear they used. I used it as an excuse to reach out to them via their e-mail. I wasn't expecting a response, but to my surprise, they responded. And were actually quite friendly. I told of how much I loved UE (didn't even know there was a name for it then) and they kindly sent me to UER, which was how I got my start here.

So to sum it up, I like them and I think what they are doing is important. And in reality it really opened the door for me and my own exploring, and introduced me to all of you. That's a win in my book!

I have a Detroiter in my urbex network in Korea and can pass it along to her.
