Looking for Permission to Enter Asylum < on 1/23/2017 5:36 PM > | Reply with Quote
Hi all,
I write about science and I've pitched a story about the history of deinstitutionalization to the news agency at which I work in Washington, DC. I wanted to get some pics or video of an abandoned asylum, but they say it would need to be with permission. Does anyone here know of an abandoned asylum around the DMV with an owner who I could contact for permission to enter?

I second said motion and hereby give the stamp of my approval
Kabbalah is an undramatic tradition that requires great patience and stability. One of the reasons for this tempo is that everyone has to mature his potential gradually and thoroughly at his natural pace. In this way his life's work unfolds at the right moment in his own and the cosmos's time. Z.B.S. Halevi -- Kabbalah

You got to do your own leg work. Maybe someone will be generous but doubtful. They don't know you and securing permission is done usually by building trust with the right people. To risk this for a stranger is foolish.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

What about Pennhurst? It's not *that* far from DC, and there are tours there (although I'm not sure if they're open in winter)
Please do not mistake me for one of those people...

I think the project sounds interesting, although I don't understand why you haven't pursued other avenues for getting the story picked up. I assume it's about national trends, so why not find public domain pics from all over the country? When it comes to permission, I suspect you will get a lot more out of your media credentials than you will out of your post here. All the same, best of luck and I hope you post your story here when it's published!

Trans-Allegheny is definitely worth a look. It went against everything I believe in to pay money to be allowed in, but the money goes to a good cause. They're doing an amazing job restoring it.

Agreed, I really enjoyed the tour there and was able to see the restored parts and the parts that haven't been restored yet. You can also take as many photos as you'd like.
